Why FFmpeg Repeats the First Frame When Looping a Meditation Video

A first frame at the end of each pass is normal for a whole-input loop. A one-frame FFmpeg loop filter can instead repeat only that opening frame.

Most often, FFmpeg is doing exactly what the selected loop option tells it to do. The input option -stream_loop repeats the whole video, so playback returns to the opening frame at the end of each pass. By contrast, the video loop filter can repeat only a buffered section; with a one-frame buffer starting at frame zero, it repeats the first frame over and over. If the repeat happens only at the clip boundary, the transition from the final image to the opening image may also be the reason it looks abrupt.

First identify where the repeat happens

Watch or inspect the output and distinguish between two symptoms:

  • Only at the end of a full pass: the clip returns to its opening frame. That is expected when looping the complete input.
  • Repeatedly within a pass: check for a frame-loop filter or another part of the command that affects the video stream. The whole-input loop alone does not explain a first frame freezing throughout the clip.

The exact cause in a particular file cannot be determined without its command, input details, and FFmpeg version.

Check how the video is being looped

Whole-input loop: -stream_loop

FFmpeg documents -stream_loop as an input option: 0 means no looping and -1 means infinite looping. Put it before the -i for the input it should repeat:

ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -i meditation.mp4 ...

This repeats the complete input stream. Returning to the video’s first frame at the end of each full pass is normal. If the first frame repeats before the pass ends, inspect the rest of the options and filters in the command. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.

Frame loop: the loop video filter

The video loop filter buffers frames and repeats a configured portion. Its size controls the maximum number of buffered frames, while start selects where the loop begins; both default to zero. The official example loop=loop=-1:size=1:start=0 repeats just the first frame forever. Search your filter graph for loop= and check whether its frame count, start point, and loop count match your intention. Do not change these values blindly: the correct settings depend on whether you want to repeat the whole clip or only a section. The FFmpeg filters documentation describes the filter as “Loop video frames.”

Check the input type

Encoded video

For an MP4 or other encoded video, check whether the command uses -stream_loop or a video filter. Whole-input repetition and frame-buffer repetition are different operations, so identify which one is active before changing the command.

Numbered image sequence

If the input is a numbered sequence of images rather than an encoded clip, FFmpeg’s image2 demuxer has its own loop input option, disabled by default. The documentation gives its default frame rate as 25 fps. Check the image-sequence input settings rather than assuming that video-loop settings apply. See the FFmpeg image2 documentation.

Concat list

If the input is a concat list, the concat demuxer adjusts timestamps so each listed file begins where the previous one ends. The files need matching streams, codecs, and time bases; inaccurate stored duration can cause artifacts. Check both stream compatibility and duration metadata when the repeat or discontinuity occurs around a joined segment. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.

Make a whole-clip loop look smoother

A technically valid loop can still look jarring: when the clip restarts, its final image gives way to its opening image. Compare those two images in the source. A locked camera, still landscape, slow movement, or deliberate crossfade may make the transition less noticeable, but the best loop point depends on the actual footage. This is a content-editing issue, not by itself proof of an FFmpeg defect.

Troubleshoot in this order

  1. Read the full command. Confirm whether -stream_loop is present and that it appears before the relevant -i. That option repeats the whole input.
  2. Inspect the filter graph. Search for loop=; check its size, start, and loop-count parameters. A one-frame buffer starting at frame zero is the documented first-frame-only case.
  3. Identify the input path. Determine whether the source is an encoded video, an image sequence, or a concat list, then check the corresponding loop or timestamp handling.
  4. Compare the boundary. If the repeat occurs only when a complete pass ends, compare the last and first decoded images. If they differ sharply, adjust the edit or loop point for a smoother transition.
  5. If the first frame freezes within the clip, gather the complete command, FFmpeg version, input stream details, and when the repetition occurs. Without those details, the specific cause remains uncertain.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a finished meditation video looping as a YouTube live stream, rather than diagnose an FFmpeg command, StreamNeo offers a cloud-based option: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay running at home; the video streams as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
