Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

You cannot make a drive failure-proof. You can reduce that stress and, more importantly, keep a failure from becoming a data disaster: maintain another copy on a separate device and an off-site copy, then check that your backups work.
Why does my external hard drive keep failing?
A hard drive can develop errors during ordinary use. Its monitoring system, SMART (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology), tracks drive conditions; examples include read retries, slow spin-up, high temperature, and excessive bad sectors. Warning thresholds vary by manufacturer and model, so there is no single symptom or test that predicts exactly when a drive will stop working. Seagate explains its SMART alerts at Seagate Support.

Heat, impact, and poor storage conditions
Sustained high temperatures and restricted airflow can harm a drive. Western Digital (WD) recommends leaving airflow around external drives and specifies at least three inches of clearance on its general external-drive guidance page. Keep the drive on a stable, ventilated surface rather than stacking it or covering it. Avoid dropping, jolting, shaking, or putting objects on it. Water, high humidity, extreme temperatures, and static can also damage drives; store them in a cool, dry place and protect exposed connectors and pins. See WD’s storage guidance and Seagate’s reliability explanation.
Power and connection problems
Use the drive’s supplied power supply, or a replacement that matches its specifications. WD recommends a surge protector for external drives that use an AC power adapter; that is protection against power surges, not a remedy for mechanical wear. Follow the drive’s connection instructions, use the provided cable, avoid a USB hub where WD advises against one, and safely eject the drive before unplugging it. See WD’s external-drive guidance and WD’s connection and power instructions.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required

Data can disappear without a mechanical failure
Accidental deletion, file corruption, malware, or an event such as a fire or flood can make files unavailable even when the drive still operates. A backup plan therefore needs to protect the data, not just the hardware.
How do I stop my external hard drive from failing?
You cannot prevent every component or media fault, but you can reduce preventable physical and environmental stress:

- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable

- Give the drive airflow and a stable surface; do not stack it or obstruct ventilation.
- Keep it dry and away from extreme temperatures and static buildup.
- Avoid impacts, shaking, rough handling, and pressure on the drive or its connectors.
- Use the specified power supply and cable, and safely eject before disconnecting.
- For a model with an AC adapter, consider surge protection as WD recommends.
WD says it is acceptable to leave an external drive powered on continuously, that turning it on and off a few times a day is normal, and that it can be powered off when not in use. Treat this as WD’s guidance, not a universal rule for every drive model: WD support.
Is one external hard drive enough for a backup?
No—not if that drive is the only duplicate. If it fails, is lost, or is damaged in the same event as the computer, the backup may be lost with the original. WD cautions that moving files from a system drive to one other location is not a backup by itself. A more resilient arrangement has a working copy, a local backup on another device, and a further copy kept off-site, such as at another location or with a cloud-backup service. The off-site copy helps when an event affects the home or office. See WD’s backup guidance and Backblaze’s explanation of local and off-site backup.

| Approach | What it helps with | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| One external drive kept near the computer | Adds a local copy, but both copies may be exposed to theft, fire, or other events in the same place. | Keep another copy on a separate device and in a separate location. |
| Local drive plus an off-site copy | Separates a backup from events that affect the home or office. | Check the service’s current rules for disconnected drives, reconnection, and retention; these vary by provider and plan. |
| Manual copying | Lets you choose what to copy and when. | Make sure the copy completed and files are accessible. Copy rather than cut-and-paste or move, and leave the original in place until copying finishes. |
| Scheduled backup | Can reduce the chance of forgetting regular copies. | Check backup status and periodically restore a sample file. Backblaze recommends those checks for its service; the appropriate schedule depends on your backup product and needs. |
Cloud backup is not automatically a set-and-forget solution for an external drive. Providers differ in whether a drive must be reconnected and how long its backup is retained. For example, Backblaze’s cited policy describes removal of detached external-drive backups after more than 30 days under the configuration covered on its page; check its current terms and your plan at Backblaze’s external-drive backup guidance.
What should I do when my hard drive shows a SMART error?
- Back up accessible files promptly. Copy the most important data to another device before spending time on troubleshooting. Do not rely on the warned drive as your only copy. Seagate says a drive can still appear to work, and some diagnostics can pass, after a SMART warning.
- Check the conditions related to the warning. If it points to temperature, improve ventilation and check that airflow is not blocked.
- Run the manufacturer’s diagnostic if appropriate. Seagate recommends SeaTools for its drives. A diagnostic result is useful, but a passing test does not promise that the drive will last.
- Replace a drive that reports a persistent error. Seagate says a SMART error has no general method to repair its underlying cause and advises replacement if SeaTools reports an error. Consult the manufacturer for model-specific guidance.
SMART thresholds differ by drive design and manufacturer. A warning is not a precise countdown or a guarantee of immediate failure; it is a reason to protect the data now. Seagate’s guidance is at Seagate Support.

What if the drive makes an unusual sound?
WD lists beeps, clanks, clicks, clunks, grinding, humming, and vibrations as abnormal in its troubleshooting guidance, while noting that some sounds are normal. If you notice a sound that is unusual for your drive, protect accessible data promptly and consult the manufacturer. A sound alone does not establish the same diagnosis for every model. See WD’s troubleshooting guidance.
Can reliability ratings tell me how long my drive will last?
No. Annualized failure rate (AFR) and mean time between failures (MTBF) are population-level measures, not predictions for one particular drive. Seagate describes AFR as an estimate of the percentage of similar products expected to fail in a year due to a supplier cause, and notes that some causes, including excessive shock and handling damage, are excluded from the cited measure. It also gives an older, model-specific Barracuda ES.2 manual example of 0.73% AFR; that is not a current estimate for consumer external drives. Seagate discusses MTBF and AFR at Seagate’s reliability page.

Neither a passing test nor a rating establishes a universal failure percentage or typical lifespan for consumer external drives. The result depends on the model, usage, environment, and the population and period behind a statistic. Do not read a population metric as a promise that an individual drive will last for a particular time.
