The Gemini app on an Android phone can connect to Google Home, while Gemini for Home is a separate voice assistant that replaces Google Assistant on eligible speakers and displays after a home opts in. Their features, setup requirements, and limitations differ.
First, distinguish phone Gemini from Gemini for Home

These are separate experiences: installing or using Gemini on a phone does not by itself replace the assistant on a Nest speaker or display.

Can Gemini set alarms?
On a phone
Gemini can handle alarm requests as a mobile assistant. You can ask it to set an alarm rather than opening the clock app, although exact behavior can depend on the phone and how Gemini is configured.
On a Google speaker or display
Google lists alarms and timers among the basic Gemini for Home features. Its Google Home update notes through May 11, 2026 also describe improvements to alarm commands, including the example “Set an alarm for tomorrow morning at 6:00 am.” These are Google’s documented features and example commands, not independent performance tests.

Can Gemini run Google Assistant routines?
The Gemini mobile app on Android can start some routines by voice or typed command. That does not mean every Google Assistant routine will work unchanged: Google says some routine starters and actions are unsupported. In particular, an action that depends on Gemini asking a follow-up question and continuing a back-and-forth exchange may not run as part of a routine.
The documented capability is starting supported routines; it should not be mistaken for a guarantee that Gemini can create, edit, or execute every existing routine. If a routine fails, check whether its starter and each action are supported, and try issuing the unsupported conversational step directly instead of embedding it in the routine.

Gemini for Home
Gemini for Home is designed to control Google Home-compatible devices from eligible speakers and displays. Google’s supported-services information notes that partner-service availability can vary by region, so a compatible device or service may not be available everywhere.
Setup requirements and safety limits for phone control
Google documents these requirements for Google Home control through the Gemini mobile app:
- Use the Gemini mobile app on Android.
- Sign in with a personal Google Account; work and school accounts are not supported for this connection.
- Keep Keep Activity turned on.
- Connect Google Home to Gemini. The connection is unavailable in Gemini in Google Messages, the web app, and Live chats.
Google warns: “Home controls are for convenience only, not safety- or security-critical purposes.” Do not rely on a command to start or stop something if failure could cause injury or harm. Google also says the app cannot complete security-device actions that require a PIN.

Gemini for Home is an opt-in upgrade for eligible Google speakers and displays. Google says early access is rolling out to selected countries, languages, and homes; users are notified when it becomes available to their home. Once switched, compatible devices in that home use Gemini for Home, and the home cannot switch back to Google Assistant. Treat this as a home-level, non-reversible choice—not a temporary setting to test casually.

Google lists basic features at no cost, including smart-home controls, media search and playback, alarms and timers, calendar, notes, lists, reminders, and general questions. Some more advanced features, including Gemini Live, require a Google Home Premium subscription and a compatible device. Gemini Live is distinct from ordinary voice commands: Google says actions are not supported during a Live conversation, so leave that conversation before asking to control lights or set an event.
What is happening to Google Assistant on phones?
In an August 6, 2026 announcement, a Google employee said the company would begin removing Assistant from mobile devices on September 3, 2026, with the change expected to reach users over a period of weeks. The announcement concerned mobile devices and paired accessories, not Nest or Google Home speakers and displays. The timing is a stated rollout, not confirmation that every phone has already changed.
