Excel stores dates as serial numbers so it can calculate with them; the cell’s number format determines whether you see a date or the underlying number. To fix a date showing as a number, select the cell or range and choose Home → Number Format → Short Date or Long Date. If that does not work, check whether the value is text, whether a time is hidden, or whether the workbook uses a different date system.
Why Excel displays a date as a number
Excel represents dates with sequential serial numbers. In the default 1900 date system, January 1, 1900 is serial 1, and Microsoft gives January 1, 2008 as serial 39448. The number is the stored value; the cell format controls how Excel displays it. If a date cell is set to General or Number, Excel can show the serial instead of a readable date. This is usually a display issue, not a damaged date. Changing the format does not change the underlying date value, so date calculations can continue to use it.

Format the number as a date
- Select the cell or range containing the serial number.
- On the Home tab, open Number Format and choose Short Date or Long Date.
- If you need another style, open Format Cells by right-clicking the selection and choosing Format Cells, or press Ctrl+1. Choose a date format, or use a custom format if the built-in choices do not show the order or detail you need.
Short Date is compact; Long Date spells out more of the date. Choose an explicit format if the same display needs to be clear across computers: default date and time appearances can depend on regional settings. See Microsoft’s guidance on date formats and regional settings.

If formatting does not fix it, identify what is in the cell
The value may be text rather than an Excel date
A string that looks like a date is not always stored as a date value. For text Excel recognizes, =DATEVALUE(A1) converts the text in A1 to a serial number. Format the formula result as a date using the steps above. For a range of text dates, Microsoft’s instructions for converting dates stored as text describe converting the values and applying a date format.
DATEVALUE depends on Excel recognizing the text as a date. A string such as 1/2/2024 can be ambiguous because its month and day order may vary by locale. Verify the intended order before converting; formatting cannot correct a date that was interpreted as the wrong day or month. The workbook may use a different date system
Excel workbooks can use the 1900 or 1904 date system. If dates are shifted by a large number of days after data or a workbook is moved, check the workbook’s date-system setting before changing the cell values. The serial must be interpreted using the system in effect for that workbook; see Microsoft’s date and time format guidance.

Excel stores time as a fraction of a day: 0.5 represents noon. A format that shows only the date can therefore hide the time portion of a value. If the time matters, choose a date-and-time format in Format Cells. Microsoft describes the fractional representation in its NOW function documentation.

Quick checks for a stubborn date cell
- A plausible serial number appears: apply Short Date or Long Date.
- The display stays numeric or conversion fails: check whether the entry is text; if Excel recognizes it as a date, convert with DATEVALUE and format the result.
- The date is far off after moving data: check whether the workbook uses the 1900 or 1904 date system before editing values.
- The date is right but the time is missing: apply a date-and-time display format.
- The same workbook looks different on another computer: use an explicit date format rather than relying on regional defaults.
