Put their identifiers together—4 and 20—and they read “420.” Elon Musk called the numerical coincidence just that, while adding a half-barrel detail about the booster’s height.
Why did the Starship stack spell “420”?
The number came from the vehicles’ identifiers: Super Heavy Booster 4 and Starship prototype Ship 20. Austin Barnard, identified in contemporaneous reports as the person who pointed out the combination, drew Musk’s response on August 6, 2021. Futurism and Space Explored reproduced his reply.

The quoted post gives Musk’s stated explanation: he called the 4-and-20 pairing coincidental. The reports establish that he said this, not independent evidence of his intent.

What did Musk mean by the half-barrel comment?
Musk said the booster had originally been 70 meters tall and that SpaceX eliminated a half barrel for manufacturing efficiency. His sentence ends with an ellipsis, rather than a stated revised height.
Futurism interpreted the unfinished line as implying a height of 69 meters. That is the reporter’s reading of the ellipsis, not a completed figure Musk explicitly gave in the quoted post.

Was Booster 4 and Ship 20’s stack a launch?
No. Space Explored described the August 6, 2021 lift as a brief fitment test: Ship 20 was placed atop Booster 4 and then removed. The reports do not describe this particular stack as proceeding to launch.
This is a historical account of two 2021 prototypes and their identifiers. It does not establish Starship’s present configuration or status.
