They do not reveal what the dog is dreaming about. Stiff or violent movements, a prolonged episode, unresponsiveness, or concerning symptoms afterward call for veterinary advice rather than a home diagnosis.
Why does my dog twitch in their sleep?
During REM sleep—the phase associated with dreaming—a dog may move its legs, twitch, shift its eyes behind closed lids, breathe shallowly or irregularly, whine, or make other small sounds. Veterinary guidance describes these behaviors as commonly associated with dreams, but a particular movement cannot tell you what the dog is dreaming about. VCA Animal Hospitals explains how movement and breathing can change during dream episodes, and the American Kennel Club describes brief, intermittent twitching and paw movements as common.

Puppies and senior dogs are described as twitching more than middle-aged dogs. One proposed explanation is that the brain systems that inhibit muscle movement during sleep may be less efficient in younger or older dogs. That is a theory, not a way to determine whether a specific episode is harmless. Age alone cannot rule out a medical problem.
Is my dog dreaming or having a seizure?
Sleep movements can resemble a medical event, so focus on the pattern and the dog’s response rather than trying to diagnose the cause. A relaxed dog with brief, intermittent movements is more consistent with ordinary dream-associated movement. AKC chief veterinarian Dr. Jerry Klein says those movements are often brief—under 30 seconds—and intermittent; seizure movements tend to be more rigid and violent. Some seizures can happen during sleep, so movement during sleep does not by itself rule one out. AKC’s guidance contrasts typical dream movement with signs that warrant veterinary examination.

| What you observe | What to do |
|---|---|
| Brief, intermittent twitching or paw paddling while the dog appears relaxed and asleep | Often compatible with dreaming; observe without touching or startling the dog. |
| Stiff, rigid, violent, or prolonged movement | Contact a veterinarian promptly for advice. |
| The dog does not respond, or has drooling, foaming, labored breathing, vomiting, loss of bladder or bowel control, or confusion or panting afterward | Seek veterinary advice promptly. These signs do not establish a diagnosis, but they raise concern for a seizure-like or other medical event. |
| A new or recurring episode, or the dog is not acting normally while awake | Contact your veterinarian, even if the cause is unclear. |
VCA lists stiff or prolonged movements, drooling, confusion, and incontinence as reasons for caution. PetMD also describes unresponsiveness, rigid posture, breathing difficulty, and other post-episode changes as signs associated with seizure-like events. These observations can help you decide to get care; they cannot confirm what caused the episode.
Should I wake my dog up?
Do not touch or startle a twitching dog. A surprised dog may react involuntarily and bite or scratch. If you need to wake the dog, call their name or make a noise from a safe distance rather than reaching toward them. Once awake, give them a moment and reassure them calmly. PetMD advises against startling a sleeping dog and describes safer ways to get their attention.

Why does my dog wake up at night?
A dog waking at night is not the same thing as a dog moving during sleep. The behaviors described above can occur during REM sleep, but they do not explain every nighttime waking, and waking alone does not identify a cause. If sleep disruption happens often, movements interrupt the dog’s rest, or you notice other health or behavior changes, discuss the pattern with a veterinarian rather than assuming it is a dream or trying an unverified calming product.
To make that conversation more useful, note when an episode happens, roughly how long it lasts, whether the dog responds, what the movements look like, and how the dog behaves afterward. These notes are observations for your veterinarian, not a diagnostic test.

When should I call the vet?
- Contact a veterinarian promptly for rigid, violent, or prolonged movements; unresponsiveness; labored breathing; drooling or foaming; loss of bladder or bowel control; vomiting; or confusion after an episode.
- Call if the event is new or recurring, the dog is not acting normally while awake, or you are unsure whether the dog can be roused safely.
- If you suspect the dog has been exposed to a toxin, seek immediate veterinary examination rather than waiting to see whether the movements stop.
- Ask your veterinarian about frequent sleep disturbances or movements that repeatedly interrupt rest.
PetMD recommends immediate veterinary examination when toxic exposure is suspected. No consumer product can establish the cause of these movements or replace veterinary assessment.
