YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all; its encoder guidance says a live stream ends when the encoder stops sending content. If your broadcast actually stops, check the encoder and YouTube Live Control Room rather than assuming the archive limit caused it.
What YouTube’s 12-hour limit means
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns, “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” This applies to encoder, webcam, and mobile live streams. The warning describes replay capture; it does not say YouTube automatically terminates every broadcast at 12 hours. YouTube Help: Archive live streams

YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says to end a stream by stopping content from the encoder. That makes the encoder’s transmission status relevant when a broadcast itself ends. The official guidance does not establish a universal automatic cutoff at hour 12. YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for live streaming
Forest sounds do not change this distinction: stream operation, saved replay, and viewer rewind are separate issues in YouTube’s guidance.

First identify what actually stopped
- The encoder stopped sending: Check its status and logs around the end time. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe stopping transmission as the way to end the stream.
- The broadcast ended while the encoder appeared active: Compare the encoder’s status and logs with the stream status in YouTube Live Control Room. The published guidance reviewed here does not diagnose an individual case of this kind, so the cause cannot be established from the 12-hour warning alone.
- The live broadcast continued, but there is no replay: This is consistent with YouTube’s warning that an over-12-hour stream may not be captured. The warning does not guarantee a replay for shorter streams either.
How to troubleshoot a stream that ends
- Note the exact stop time and outcome. Establish whether the encoder stopped transmitting, the Live Control Room marked the broadcast ended, or only the replay is missing. These are different problems.
- Check the encoder status and logs. Review what the encoder reports at or immediately before the stop time. The encoder guidance makes its transmission central to ending a stream, but does not give one diagnosis for every unexplained interruption.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. Compare the stream’s status there with what the encoder reports. If the encoder appeared active but YouTube shows the broadcast ended, the available general guidance does not by itself explain why.
- Keep a local recording as a backup. YouTube recommends making a local archive and checking that the recording file is growing while streaming; verify the file’s integrity afterward. A recording drive protects the recording, not the live connection. YouTube Help: Live streaming tips
Could this instead be a DVR rewind problem?
YouTube warns that viewers’ ability to rewind may be limited or unavailable when a stream becomes very long and exceeds 12 hours. That is a playback limitation for viewers, not an explanation for why the encoder stopped or why the broadcast ended. If viewers cannot seek backward, check the stream’s DVR setting and distinguish that symptom from a stopped broadcast. YouTube Help: DVR on live streams
