FFmpeg YouTube Stream Stops After an RTMP Timeout: How to Keep It Alive

A practical guide to FFmpeg TCP keepalive, RTMP timeout options, and YouTube connection troubleshooting.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If an FFmpeg YouTube stream stops after an RTMP timeout, first check the exact error and verify the stream URL and protocol in YouTube Live Control Room. For an outgoing FFmpeg RTMP connection, -tcp_keepalive 1 enables basic operating-system TCP keepalive, which can help detect dead peers or maintain an idle connection. It is not a media heartbeat, a reconnect command, or a guarantee that YouTube will keep the stream open.

What to do first when an FFmpeg YouTube stream times out

  1. Save the failure details. Keep the full FFmpeg command and the log lines around the failure. Note your FFmpeg version and build, the input protocol, whether the destination uses RTMP or RTMPS, and whether FFmpeg exits, hangs, or continues running while output writes fail. Redact the stream key and any credentials before sharing logs.
  2. Verify the destination. Compare the output destination with the stream-specific URL shown in YouTube Live Control Room. If using RTMPS, confirm that your FFmpeg build supports it and use the secure URL YouTube provides; do not assume the ordinary RTMP URL is interchangeable. YouTube’s guidance for connection-timeout and SSL errors is to verify the stream URL and encoder support for RTMPS. YouTube: Fix live stream errors.
  3. Try TCP keepalive if the symptoms fit. Add -tcp_keepalive 1 to the output options for an outgoing RTMP connection, then check the log and stream behavior. It requests basic TCP keepalive; it does not correct a bad key, rejected endpoint, failed input, or network outage.
  4. Use the exact error to choose the next check. An input read timeout points toward the source. An RTMP/RTMPS rejection points toward the URL, key, or protocol. Failed output writes or an exited process require addressing the reported transport or process failure; TCP keepalive alone cannot restart a dead FFmpeg process.

What -tcp_keepalive 1 actually does

FFmpeg documents tcp_keepalive as enabling the TCP SO_KEEPALIVE mechanism to detect dead peers and help maintain long-lived idle connections. Its documented default is off. The option enables the basic mechanism; it does not set platform-specific idle time, probe interval, or probe count, which remain governed by operating-system defaults. See the FFmpeg TCP protocol documentation.

TCP keepalive operates at the transport layer. It is not proof that video or audio packets are flowing, nor does it instruct YouTube to preserve a publishing session. If the stream is actively sending media and the connection is rejected or broken for another reason, this flag may not solve the problem.

Do FFmpeg’s timeout options keep an RTMP stream alive?

Option Documented role What it does not mean
RTMP timeout Maximum time to wait for an incoming connection; it implies listen mode. It is not a periodic keepalive for an outgoing publisher.
rw_timeout Maximum time, in microseconds, that network read or write operations may wait. It is not documented as a recurring media heartbeat or keepalive interval.
tcp_keepalive Enables basic TCP SO_KEEPALIVE for dead-peer detection and long idle connections. It does not set keepalive timing or guarantee YouTube session continuity.

These options have different purposes. Check the FFmpeg RTMP protocol options and TCP protocol options for the documentation matching your installed build.

Why HTTP reconnect flags are not a general RTMP output fix

FFmpeg documents its reconnect options in the HTTP protocol section, including cases involving streamed or non-seekable HTTP inputs. That documentation does not establish those flags as a general mechanism for reconnecting an RTMP publishing output. Apply options to the protocol and direction they document; do not copy HTTP input advice into an RTMP output command on the assumption that it will recover a YouTube stream. See FFmpeg HTTP protocol options.

Diagnose the failure by symptom

FFmpeg reports an input read timeout

Investigate the source being read: whether it is still reachable, whether its protocol connection has failed, and whether the input itself has stopped supplying data. An output-side TCP keepalive does not repair a stalled input.

YouTube reports a connection timeout

Check that the destination matches the stream URL currently displayed in Live Control Room and that the publishing key is current and correctly configured. If the supplied URL is RTMPS, verify that the FFmpeg build supports that protocol.

YouTube or FFmpeg reports an SSL error

Confirm the RTMPS URL and encoder support. YouTube advises trying port 443 for an SSL error when appropriate to the URL shown in Live Control Room; use the provided stream-specific endpoint rather than guessing a port or constructing a URL yourself. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.

FFmpeg keeps running but output writes fail

Read the surrounding log lines to distinguish a blocked write from a server rejection or transport failure. rw_timeout is an I/O wait ceiling, not an automatic recovery mechanism. If the publishing process exits, a keepalive flag cannot relaunch it; recovery requires a separately configured and suitable process or output-recovery mechanism.
