Why Does Windows Update Take So Long? Causes and Complete Fixes

Windows Update can appear frozen because of network speed, update size, low storage, corrupted cache files, stopped services or incompatible drivers. Follow this ordered troubleshooting guide.

Windows Update can take a long time because downloading and installing are separate jobs. Download speed is governed mainly by your internet connection, network settings and the size of the update. Installation can remain on one percentage while Windows checks packages, replaces protected files or waits for a service, driver, permission or restart condition. A number that appears stuck is not automatically proof that the update has failed.

Keep the computer plugged in and online while you work through the checks below. Begin with reversible steps, then move to cache and system-file repairs if the basic checks do not help.

What determines Windows Update time?

Microsoft says that download time primarily depends on internet connection speed, network settings and update size. A large feature upgrade on a slow or congested connection can therefore take much longer than a small security update on a fast wired connection. Wi-Fi interference, a metered or restricted network, a VPN, proxy settings and other traffic can also reduce the effective download rate.

Installation time is less predictable. Windows may verify the download, unpack files, service the component store, migrate settings, update drivers and wait for a restart. The percentage shown in Settings is not a precise progress clock; it can stay unchanged while work continues in the background.

Is a frozen percentage actually stuck?

Not necessarily. If the computer is still responsive and the storage-activity indicator shows work, leave it connected to power and the internet for a while longer. Avoid forcing a shutdown during an active installation unless the machine is completely unresponsive for an extended period.

If the same percentage remains for an unusually long time with no sign of activity, Microsoft recommends checking for updates again, restarting the computer and running the Windows Update Troubleshooter. A restart can clear a process that is blocking installation.

Fix Windows Update in the safest order

1. Stabilize power and the network

  1. Connect a laptop to AC power. Do not rely on a low battery during an upgrade.
  2. Use a reliable Wi-Fi connection or, preferably, Ethernet. Pause large downloads, streaming and cloud synchronization on the same network.
  3. Temporarily disconnect a VPN or proxy if your organization permits it, and make sure Windows is not using a metered connection that prevents normal downloading.
  4. Leave the device connected while the update downloads and installs.

These steps address the most common reason for a slow download without changing Windows system files.

2. Check available disk space

Insufficient storage can prevent an update from downloading, unpacking or completing its temporary rollback data. For upgrades, Microsoft lists a minimum of 16 GB free for a 32-bit operating system or 20 GB for a 64-bit operating system. Those figures are requirements for the upgrade scenario, not a guarantee that every update will finish with exactly that amount.

  • 256 GB SSD of storage.
  • Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
  1. Open Settings > System > Storage in Windows 11, or Settings > System > Storage in Windows 10.
  2. Review the available space on the system drive, normally C:.
  3. Empty Recycle Bin, remove unneeded downloads and uninstall applications you no longer use. Windows Storage settings can also remove temporary files.
  4. Retry Windows Update after freeing space.

If the internal drive cannot provide enough room, Microsoft notes that a USB flash drive may be needed for an upgrade. Choose a drive with adequate capacity, the connector your computer accepts and compatibility with your Windows edition; it is an expansion aid, not a substitute for repairing a damaged update.

3. Restart, then check again

  1. Save your work and select Start > Power > Restart.
  2. After Windows starts, open Settings > Windows Update in Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update in Windows 10.
  3. Select Check for updates and allow the process to run without shutting down.

Restarting is especially useful after an interrupted download or when another process has left an update operation waiting.

4. Run the built-in Windows Update Troubleshooter

The troubleshooter checks common service, configuration and database conditions and may apply a repair automatically.

  1. In Windows 11, open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  2. Find Windows Update and select Run.
  3. Apply any recommended fix, restart if requested, then return to Windows Update and select Check for updates.

Windows 10 uses the equivalent path under Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot. The exact wording can vary slightly by release.

5. Reset the Windows Update cache

Corrupted or incomplete files in the update cache can make a download repeat, stop at a percentage or produce an error. Resetting the cache removes downloaded update data; Windows will download fresh copies afterward.

  1. Sign in with an administrator account.
  2. Press Windows key + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  3. In the Services window, locate Windows Update, right-click it and choose Stop.
  4. Open File Explorer and go to C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution.
  5. Delete the contents of that folder. Do not delete the SoftwareDistribution folder itself. If a file is in use, confirm that the Windows Update service is stopped and retry.
  6. Return to Services, right-click Windows Update and choose Start.
  7. Restart the PC, open Windows Update and select Check for updates.

This procedure changes update cache files, not your personal documents. The next scan may take longer because Windows must download the packages again.

6. Check permissions, date, time and connected hardware

  • Permissions: Use an administrator account or provide administrator credentials when Windows requests them. Restricted permissions can prevent services from writing update files.
  • Date and time: Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time in Windows 11, or Settings > Time & Language > Date & time in Windows 10. Turn on automatic time and automatic time-zone selection, then select Sync now when available. Incorrect clock information can interfere with update validation.
  • External devices: Disconnect unnecessary USB drives, docks, printers and other accessories while updating. Leave only essential keyboard, mouse, display and network hardware attached.
  • Drivers: If the problem began after adding hardware or if the troubleshooter reports a compatibility issue, install an appropriate current driver from the hardware maker before retrying. Do not interrupt an update to experiment with unrelated drivers.

7. Temporarily investigate software interference

Security software, firewall rules or another background program can block the service or hold a file open. First make sure your antivirus and firewall are up to date. If you suspect interference, use the product’s documented, temporary pause or exclusion procedure only if you understand the risk and your organization’s policy allows it; restore protection immediately afterward. Windows Update should not be left unprotected as a permanent workaround.

8. Repair Windows system files with DISM and SFC

Use these commands when the troubleshooter and cache reset do not resolve repeated failures, especially when Windows reports damaged component or system files. Keep the command order because System File Checker can use the component-store repair performed by DISM.

  1. Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it and select Run as administrator.
  2. Run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth and wait for it to complete. The progress percentage can pause for several minutes.
  3. When DISM finishes, run sfc /scannow and wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  4. Restart Windows and try Check for updates again.

Do not close the administrator window while either scan is running. If a command reports that it could not complete, note the exact message before attempting additional repairs.

What common error codes mean

Error Typical clue First actions
0x800705b4 The update took too long to install or was interrupted. Confirm stable connectivity, restart, run the troubleshooter and check for antivirus or firewall interference.
0x80240034 An incomplete update or connection problem. Check that Windows Update services are running, then run the troubleshooter and retry.
0x800f0922 Insufficient disk space or a component/.NET issue; drivers can also be involved. Free space, disconnect unnecessary hardware and check relevant drivers before retrying.
0x8007000d Damaged Windows Update files or cache corruption. Run the troubleshooter, reset the SoftwareDistribution cache and use DISM/SFC if needed.

An error code narrows the investigation but does not prove a single cause on every PC. Record the code, the percentage at which it appeared and what changed immediately before the failure.

Windows 11 restart and monthly update behavior

Windows 11 automatically downloads and installs updates. Microsoft documentation dated August 14, 2026 says that, for supported Windows 11 versions, updates requiring a restart can be held and installed with the monthly security update so the device restarts once a month. Availability depends on the Windows 11 version that Microsoft currently supports. If your device shows a restart notification, use an active-hours or restart-scheduling option rather than repeatedly powering off during installation.

Choosing the next fix by symptom

Symptom Start here Escalate to
Download is slow but the percentage increases Stable power, Ethernet or reliable Wi-Fi, and pause competing traffic. Check network settings and available storage.
Percentage is unchanged and the PC is responsive Keep it plugged in and online, then restart and retry if it remains unchanged. Run the troubleshooter and reset the cache.
Update fails with a code Use the code table and run the troubleshooter. Apply the matching cache, storage, driver or DISM/SFC step.
Failure repeats after cache reset Verify date/time, permissions and external hardware. Run DISM followed by SFC and retry.

When to stop and seek additional help

Stop repeating the same cycle if Windows reports a new error each time, cannot complete DISM or SFC, or becomes unable to boot normally. Photograph or write down the exact code, edition and version of Windows, free space, the percentage reached and the steps already tried. Those details help a support technician distinguish a network problem from a component-store, storage or hardware problem. Do not delete arbitrary folders under C:Windows or interrupt a clearly active installation merely because the displayed percentage has not changed.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can look for common Windows issues, clean temporary and cache files, review settings and provide an app-crash log. It complements antivirus protection rather than replacing it, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash; it runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7 with a category-based free trial of at least two days before a subscription.

The Bottom Line

Most long Windows Update sessions come down to connection conditions, update size, storage, cache integrity or a process waiting on a service, driver or restart. Keep power and internet stable, verify free space, restart, run the matching troubleshooter, then reset the cache and repair system files in that order.
