A torrent stuck at 0% or 0 B/s is usually waiting for usable peers, blocked by your network, unable to discover peers, or unable to write to its download location. Check those conditions in that order, then test with one known-good, authorized torrent to identify whether the fault is local or swarm-specific.
What a stalled torrent actually means
BitTorrent is a transfer protocol: your client obtains pieces of a file from other computers in a swarm and, while downloading, may upload pieces to others. A task showing 0% or 0 B/s is not automatically broken. It may have metadata but no peer currently offering a needed piece, or it may be unable to connect to the swarm at all.

Use content you are authorized to download. The protocol itself is neutral, but copyright permission depends on the specific file and your location. This guide deals with the client, network and storage conditions that affect a legitimate transfer; it does not direct you to unauthorized sources.

Read the status before changing settings
Open the torrent’s details pane and record the seed count, peer count, tracker messages, connection indicator and destination path. Those observations narrow the problem faster than changing random settings.

Fix a torrent that is not downloading

Check seeds and peers first
A seed has a complete copy; a peer has only part of the content. Your client needs at least one reachable peer with the pieces it still lacks. In the torrent’s statistics, distinguish the number discovered from the number currently connected. A displayed count of zero connected peers means there is nobody to transfer from at that moment.
Check the torrent’s health indicator and leave the task running for a short period so additional peers can appear. If the swarm has no usable seed or peer after that, waiting may be the only effective action. Try a different, legitimately available torrent for the same content only when you have permission to obtain it. No router setting can manufacture a seed for an empty swarm.

Check the client’s connection indicator and firewall permission
Most clients show a colored network icon or a text status. Red, blocked or firewalled status points to a NAT or firewall reachability problem. On Windows, open Windows Security > Firewall & network protection > Allow an app through firewall. Select your torrent client, allow it on the network types you actually use, and save the change. If the client is not listed, use Allow another app and select its installed executable.

If a managed work or school computer controls the firewall, you may need the administrator rather than a local change. Restart the client after changing the rule and check whether the indicator changes.

Repair router reachability with UPnP, NAT-PMP or a forwarded port
Peer-to-peer clients accept incoming connections through a listening port. In the client’s connection settings, enable automatic port mapping if available: UPnP is common on many routers, while NAT-PMP is used by some network equipment. Apply the setting, restart the client and check its indicator.
If automatic mapping does not work, configure a manual port forward in the router. The client displays its listening port; forward that same TCP and, where supported, UDP port to the computer’s local IP address. Reserve the computer’s local address in the router first so the rule does not point to a different device later. Also allow the same port through the operating-system firewall.
Router labels and screens differ by manufacturer. Do not forward the router’s administration interface, and do not publish your public address or credentials. A forwarded port improves reachability only when the router, firewall and client agree; it cannot solve a swarm with no seeds.

Check tracker responses and DHT discovery
A tracker receives periodic announces from clients and returns peer information. The Distributed Hash Table (DHT) provides another discovery route for trackerless torrents. In the torrent’s tracker tab, look for successful responses and messages such as timeout, connection refused or host not found. A failed tracker can leave you with no peer list even when the content exists elsewhere.

For torrents that support it, keep DHT enabled in the client’s network or BitTorrent settings. A firewall, proxy or VPN can block DHT traffic or tracker requests, so compare the status after temporarily testing without those layers. Private torrents may intentionally restrict DHT and peer exchange; follow that torrent’s rules rather than enabling features that violate them.

Verify the download folder and writable storage
Open the torrent’s save-location setting and confirm that the folder still exists. External drives can be disconnected, removable media can receive a new drive letter, and a network share can be offline. Reconnect or remount the intended volume before resuming.
Check free capacity in File Explorer, then confirm that your Windows account can create and delete a small test file in the destination. A full volume, read-only media, a permissions error or a path that no longer exists prevents pieces from being written. If the current drive is too small, choose a different writable destination or attach a USB external hard drive with sufficient capacity. Extra storage cannot help a torrent whose swarm has no seeders.

If you moved an incomplete download manually, use the client’s relocation or “set location” command so it can recheck the existing pieces instead of starting a second copy.

Pause, resume and recheck after each correction
After fixing a firewall, mapping, tracker or storage issue, pause the task and resume it. This makes the client reopen the file handles and announce again. If the client offers a data recheck, run it after an interrupted move or suspected corruption; it should verify existing pieces before downloading missing ones.
Watch the status for a few minutes rather than judging by one instantaneous speed reading. A brief 0 B/s period can occur while the client is connecting, requesting pieces or verifying data.

Use a controlled comparison to isolate the fault
Start one known-good, well-seeded torrent containing content you are authorized to download. If it connects and progresses, your original torrent’s swarm, tracker data or metadata is the likely cause. If the test also remains at zero peers, return to the client, firewall, router, VPN/proxy and storage checks.

How to distinguish the main failure patterns

VPN, proxy and ISP-path checks
If all torrents are affected, inspect any VPN or proxy configured inside the client as well as the operating system. Temporarily disable the client proxy, or test one authorized torrent with the VPN disconnected, then restart the client and compare the connection indicator. If the transfer works only when that service is bypassed, review its port, protocol and split-tunneling settings or contact its support team. Do not expose private traffic or abandon security protections permanently just to obtain a speed test.
A network provider or managed network can also block or restrict peer-to-peer paths. Test the same client and legal torrent on a network you control, such as a trusted home connection, while respecting the network owner’s policy. If it works there but not on the original network, the path rather than the torrent data is implicated.
Common mistakes that waste time
- Changing download limits first: A speed limit cannot create peers or repair a missing destination.
- Opening many random ports: One consistent listening port, mapped to the correct computer and allowed through the firewall, is safer and easier to diagnose.
- Deleting the incomplete data immediately: You may lose verified pieces. Recheck or relocate the task first.
- Assuming a tracker error proves the file is unavailable: DHT or another permitted discovery path may still find peers; conversely, a working tracker does not guarantee that any seed has the pieces you need.
- Leaving an unauthorized download running while troubleshooting: Resolve the rights question before spending time on technical fixes.
When the torrent is still stuck
Stop changing settings when a known-good authorized torrent works, your destination is writable, and the original swarm still has no usable seed or peer. That combination identifies a content-side availability problem, not a broken Windows installation. Keep the task only if you are willing to wait for the swarm to return; otherwise remove it and obtain the content through a legitimate source.
