Windows 11’s Manage app execution aliases page turns registered app command shortcuts on or off. An execution alias is a short executable-style name—such as python.exe—that can start an app without requiring its full file path. The switch affects command launching; it does not uninstall the app, choose the default app for a file or link, or change privacy permissions.
What an app execution alias does
A packaged app can register an execution alias ending in .exe. When that alias is enabled, a user or another process can use the name to start the app instead of specifying its full path. Microsoft describes the feature in its packaging extensions documentation.

The Settings page lets you enable or disable each registered alias. If multiple apps register the same alias, Microsoft says Windows invokes the app registered last, which can make duplicate alias names a source of command conflicts.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat happens when you switch an alias off?
Windows stops making that app’s registered command shortcut available through the alias. The app remains installed: disabling its alias and uninstalling the packaged app are separate actions. The toggle changes command launching, not the app itself.

How to manage an alias
- Open Start and search for Manage app execution aliases.
- Find the entry whose command name matches the one you want to control.
- Switch that alias off to disable the shortcut, or on to make it available.
- Open a fresh terminal and try the command again. If it still behaves unexpectedly, check the command’s PATH resolution and which app or version is installed.
The entries shown are aliases registered by apps; this page is not a complete inventory of every executable that could run from a command line.
Why typing python can open the Microsoft Store
Windows includes Python-related shortcuts intended to help users find a Python package in the Store. If Python is absent, running the shortcut without arguments can direct you to the Store. The App Installer aliases for python.exe and python3.exe can be switched off on the aliases page, as described in Microsoft’s Windows Python guidance.

If you installed Python separately, the alias toggle is only one part of the explanation. Windows may run whichever matching command is found first through PATH, so another Python installation or PATH ordering can affect the result. The Python documentation also says %UserProfile%AppDataLocalMicrosoftWindowsApps must be on PATH for Windows aliases to be found.

If python is not found or starts the wrong thing
- Check whether the relevant
python.exeorpython3.exealias is enabled. - Check PATH and the Python versions installed on your PC; the alias switch does not determine every command-resolution outcome.
- Try again in a newly opened terminal after changing the setting.
There is no single troubleshooting sequence that applies to every shell, Python distribution, or Windows configuration. For more detail on the command-specific issue, see the Python for Windows documentation.

What this setting does not control
- Default apps for files and links: Settings > Apps > Default apps maps file extensions and link protocols to apps. It is separate from executable command aliases. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 default-apps instructions.
- Privacy permissions: Privacy & security settings govern access to capabilities such as the camera, location, and contacts; they do not decide which app a command alias launches. Microsoft explains these controls in its Windows 11 privacy settings guide.
- Installing or removing apps: Turning off an alias disables its command shortcut, not the associated app.
- Every command on the PC: Other executables and PATH entries can also affect which program runs when you type a command.
