Water can turn brown after a water-main flush because fast-moving water dislodges fine sediment—often iron-bearing rust—from the inside of pipes. That sediment can make water rusty brown, red, orange, or cloudy and may travel into household plumbing. Color alone cannot identify what is in the water or confirm that it is safe; check your water utility’s local instructions and any active advisory.
Why flushing can discolor tap water
Utilities flush water mains to move water through the pipes at high velocity. The flow can scour the pipe and disturb fine sediment that has built up inside it. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency describes how this process can dislodge sediment, which then mixes with water and makes it look cloudy or rusty brown in its Residential Flushing Procedure Handout.

Some disturbed particles can reach a home’s plumbing. Iron-bearing rust is a common reason for reddish, orange, or brown water, but it is not the only possible cause. The EPA notes that manganese can contribute to black-to-brown color, and other sediment may also affect appearance in its operator reference on drinking-water regulations and contaminants. A change in color is a clue, not a test result: appearance cannot establish which substance is present or whether the water is safe in a particular incident.

Check for local instructions or an advisory
Look for a notice from your water utility about the flushing work and any drinking-water advisory. Follow the restrictions and steps in that notice. The EPA says a water company should communicate precautionary actions and when water is safe to drink; if you suspect contamination and have not received an advisory, contact the utility. See the EPA’s customer guidance for water emergencies.

Avoid use during flushing if your utility says to
Some utilities ask customers not to use faucets or water-using appliances while nearby mains are being flushed, then to flush household plumbing afterward. Follow the local instructions rather than assuming one procedure applies everywhere. EPA’s residential handout describes a procedure for a particular flushing program, while its customer FAQ notes that flushing time depends on the plumbing and outlets; the water system should specify whether flushing is needed and how extensive it should be. EPA’s handout and customer FAQ provide that context.
Report persistent or unusual changes
Contact the utility if discoloration does not clear, returns repeatedly, or comes with an unusual taste, odor, or another change. Ask whether the problem affects the wider system or only your property. A sudden change during nearby flushing is consistent with sediment disturbed in the main; recurring discoloration can also come from a service pipe or plumbing inside the building. The utility can advise whether a plumber should inspect private plumbing. New York City’s Department of Environmental Protection, for example, describes discoloration and reporting in its water FAQ; its process and system-specific details apply to New York City.

Does brown water after a flush mean it is unsafe?
Not necessarily—but color by itself cannot show that it is safe, either. Iron is a common cause of brown or rusty-looking water, and the EPA lists an iron secondary drinking-water standard of 0.3 mg/L. Its manganese secondary standard is 0.05 mg/L. These are U.S. standards associated with nuisance effects such as color, sediment, taste, or staining; they are not measurements of your tap water and cannot diagnose a flushing incident. See the EPA’s secondary drinking-water standards guidance.

How long should the discoloration last?
There is no single duration that applies to every main flush, and the sources cited here do not establish a universal time for brown water to clear. The outcome depends on the local system and plumbing, so follow the utility’s instructions and contact it if the water remains discolored or does not clear. In England and Wales, the Drinking Water Inspectorate advises consumers to contact their water company if discoloration lasts more than 24 hours; that is jurisdiction-specific guidance, not a universal threshold. See the Inspectorate’s water-quality guidance.

If discoloration keeps returning or seems limited to one property, ask the utility whether nearby customers are affected and whether the service pipe or internal plumbing could be involved. The utility can help distinguish a system-wide disturbance from a localized issue; it may recommend a plumber for inspection of private plumbing.
