Selenium captures the browser’s current state when the screenshot command runs; it does not wait for your web app’s JavaScript updates to finish. Navigation readiness and application readiness are different, so wait for a condition that proves the specific content you need is visible before taking the screenshot.
Why the screenshot can be early
WebDriver navigation waits for a document-readiness milestone, not necessarily for every asynchronous application update. Selenium’s default page-load strategy, normal, waits for the document’s complete state; eager waits for interactive, and none does not wait for document readiness. Even complete does not guarantee that a single-page app has finished fetching data, rendering results, or running later JavaScript. Selenium’s browser options documentation explains these navigation milestones.
The screenshot command captures what is present when it executes. It is not an application-update wait. The JavaScript WebDriver API describes screenshot capture as a best-effort capture of the page or available browser view, depending on the circumstances; that describes the capture area, not whether the app has settled. Selenium WebDriver API
This commonly becomes a race: an action starts asynchronous work, WebDriver returns from the action, and the test reaches screenshot capture before the app reaches the desired state. Sometimes the app wins the race and sometimes the test does.

Wait for the state the screenshot must show
Use an explicit wait for a meaningful success signal, then take the screenshot. Selenium explicit waits poll a condition until it succeeds or the configured timeout expires. The selector and condition below are examples; replace them with the actual signal your app exposes.
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
from selenium.webdriver.support import expected_conditions as EC
from selenium.webdriver.support.wait import WebDriverWait
wait = WebDriverWait(driver, 10)
wait.until(EC.visibility_of_element_located((By.ID, "updated-result")))
driver.save_screenshot("after-update.png")
This waits until the result element is visible, not merely present in the DOM. Choose the condition that corresponds to the final state required by the test. Selenium’s expected-condition documentation includes checks for presence, visibility, visible text, staleness, and title contents. Waiting with Expected Conditions

When an existing result is replaced
If the update replaces an old element, first wait for the old element to become stale, then locate and wait for its replacement or for the new text. Do not keep using a reference to a node that the app has removed.
old_result = driver.find_element(By.ID, "result")
driver.find_element(By.ID, "refresh").click()
wait.until(EC.staleness_of(old_result))
wait.until(EC.visibility_of_element_located((By.ID, "result")))
driver.save_screenshot("refreshed.png")
When updated text is the success signal
If the element stays in place but its text changes, wait for the expected text rather than visibility alone:

wait.until(EC.text_to_be_present_in_element(
(By.ID, "status"), "Updated"
))
driver.save_screenshot("updated-status.png")
The right text, selector, and timeout are app-specific. A condition that only detects an intermediate state may pass before a later animation, network response, or render changes the image again.
Choose a wait strategy that matches the problem
| Strategy | What it waits for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Explicit wait | A named condition for a particular step, such as updated text becoming visible. | Tracks the application state you care about; usually the most useful choice for screenshot synchronization. |
| Fixed sleep | A set amount of elapsed time, regardless of whether the update has finished. | May still be too short on a slow run and wastes time when the update finishes quickly. |
| Implicit wait | Element lookups globally wait up to the configured duration for elements to be found. | Finding an element does not prove that its later visual update has completed. Selenium warns against mixing implicit and explicit waits because combined durations can be unpredictable. |
Selenium’s waiting strategies guidance says implicit wait defaults to zero and cautions against mixing it with explicit waits. An implicit wait is not a substitute for waiting for changed text, visibility, or another later state.

Why page-load settings and readyState may not fix it
Changing the page-load strategy can affect how long a URL navigation blocks, but it does not define when your app-specific update is complete. Likewise, checking document.readyState == "complete" only checks document readiness. Use that milestone when it is relevant, then wait separately for the result your screenshot is supposed to show.
Page-load strategy behavior applies to navigation by URL. Selenium notes it does not apply in the same way to navigation caused by clicking an element or submitting a form. For those actions especially, wait on the resulting page or component state rather than assuming the action command itself waits for the UI update.

Troubleshoot a screenshot that still looks stale
- Check command order. Confirm that the click, submit, or navigation that triggers the update happens before the wait and screenshot.
- Check what the wait proves. Ensure the condition represents the final state in the image. Visibility of a container, for example, may be true before its contents have updated.
- Handle replacements. If the app replaces a node, wait for the old element to become stale and find the new element again.
- Check for later visual changes. A passing wait can precede an animation or another asynchronous update. Strengthen the condition to match the final state rather than adding an arbitrary delay by default.
- Compare browser and driver runs. If synchronization is sound but the issue varies by browser or driver, investigate driver-specific behavior. Selenium’s troubleshooting guidance notes that some problems originate in underlying drivers.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a rendered page image without maintaining your own Selenium capture flow, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns an image or PDF; its parameters also accept names used by other screenshot APIs.
cURL example (see the ScreenshotNeo documentation for options):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo can accept consent banners before capture and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Does an explicit wait capture the screenshot automatically?
No. It waits for its condition to succeed; call the screenshot method afterward.
Why can a visible element still produce an outdated image?
Visibility may only establish that the element is displayed, not that its content or later visual changes have reached the final state. Wait for the specific updated text or other completion signal your test needs.
