Choose viewport widths from your app’s actual layout breakpoints, keep the capture environment consistent, and review—not blindly accept—any baseline updates. That turns screenshots into repeatable checks of meaningful layout states rather than a list of arbitrary device names.
Choose responsive states before choosing devices
Start with the CSS and identify where the layout changes in ways users can see: navigation collapses, columns stack, content width changes, or a modal becomes full-screen. Test just below and above those breakpoints, plus a representative width within each layout state. The exact widths must come from the application; there is no universal viewport matrix.

Explicit viewport sizes are useful when the question is whether a layout works at a particular width. A Playwright device profile is useful when the test also needs emulated characteristics such as user agent or touch behavior. Profiles are emulation presets, not proof that every physical device renders identically. Use real target devices when a result depends on handset hardware, operating-system integrations, or browser behavior that emulation does not establish. See Playwright’s emulation guide.
Configure Playwright projects and viewports
Set dimensions explicitly for breakpoint-focused tests. Use profiles only when their additional emulated settings match your test goal. This illustrative configuration includes one fixed desktop viewport and one device profile; it is not a complete browser or responsive coverage plan.

The Desktop Chrome profile supplies a Windows-specific user agent; if you want the host platform’s user agent instead, unset the profile’s user agent. Confirm that a profile exists in your installed Playwright version before using it, since device presets can change.
For breakpoint coverage, explicitly setting the viewport in a test makes the tested dimensions visible next to the assertion. Playwright’s documented default browser-context viewport is 1280×720; do not rely on defaults for a test whose result depends on a particular layout width. The default device scale factor is 1. Capture and compare a responsive screenshot
Navigate to a stable page state, then use a descriptive screenshot name for each responsive state you want to protect:

});On its first run, Playwright captures the page and creates a reference image. Its visual comparison assertion takes screenshots until two consecutive captures match, then saves the last one as the baseline. Later runs compare the capture with that reference. Keep page data, fonts, animation state, and other dynamic content stable where possible so a difference points to a UI change rather than changing test input. Playwright’s guidance on the assertion and its behavior is in Visual comparisons.
Give distinct responsive states distinct assertion names—for example, one for a narrow navigation layout and another for the stacked-column layout. A failing name then helps locate the affected state without making the test suite depend on device branding.
Viewport or full-page capture?
A normal page screenshot checks the visible viewport composition. Use it for above-the-fold layout assertions. For content below the fold, use the screenshot API’s fullPage option; that answers a different question and can produce a much taller image. Keep screenshot rendering reproducible
Playwright warns that “Browser rendering can vary based on the host OS, version, settings, hardware, power source (battery vs. power adapter), headless mode, and other factors.” Generate baselines and compare them in the same environment. In practice, align the CI image, browser version, fonts, and screenshot configuration between baseline creation and routine test runs.

If the project intentionally tests multiple operating systems or browser engines, treat each relevant environment as its own comparison context instead of assuming one baseline transfers unchanged. Browser and platform can be part of generated snapshot naming. A mismatch between capture environments is a reason to investigate conditions before relaxing comparison sensitivity.
Choose image scale consistently
The page screenshot API accepts scale: 'css' or scale: 'device'. CSS scale produces one screenshot pixel per CSS pixel. Device scale produces one pixel per device pixel, so high-DPI captures can be twice as large or larger. Choose the scale that matches the question: CSS scale is usually easier to inspect for layout geometry; device scale is relevant when high-DPI appearance itself matters.

Keep the chosen scale consistent when creating and comparing a baseline set. A browser context’s deviceScaleFactor also affects emulation, and its documented default is 1. See the Page API reference and BrowserType API reference.
Set comparison tolerances and review changes
Start with a strict comparison and inspect the output when a test fails. Playwright provides visual comparison options such as maxDiffPixels and shared configuration; there is no universal threshold that is appropriate for every app. Add tolerance only when inspected failures show known rendering noise, document why the value is suitable, and revisit it as the test surface changes. A generous threshold can hide a real responsive regression. Options are documented in Visual comparisons.

npx playwright test --update-snapshotsInspect the new screenshots and diffs, then commit only the approved baseline change alongside the UI change. Updating snapshots simply to silence a failure can turn an unintended defect into the new expected result.
Troubleshoot common screenshot-test failures
- The same test fails intermittently: Make page data and other changing content stable, wait for a meaningful ready state, and check whether animations or late-loading assets alter captures. Keep the browser and host environment aligned with baseline generation.
- Many pixels differ after a CI or dependency change: Check the host OS, browser version, fonts, settings, and headless mode before changing thresholds. Rendering-condition differences can affect images without indicating a product defect.
- The wrong responsive layout appears: Set the viewport explicitly and verify the test’s dimensions against the application’s actual CSS breakpoint. If using a device profile, check its viewport and user-agent settings rather than assuming its name guarantees a particular layout.
- The screenshot is unexpectedly large: Check whether the test uses device-pixel scale or a high
deviceScaleFactor. Use CSS scale for one screenshot pixel per CSS pixel when that is the intended comparison. - Below-the-fold content is missing: A viewport screenshot only captures the visible area. Use
fullPagefor a full-page image, or keep a viewport capture when the assertion is specifically about on-screen composition. - A baseline update masks a failure: Revert the update, inspect the diff, and decide whether the UI change was intentional before regenerating and committing the reference.
