What’s actually slowing this PC down?

A blank Puppeteer screenshot does not point to one universal bug. First check whether navigation reached the URL you intended and returned a response; next confirm the page rendered the content you expect; then wait for the application’s actual readiness condition. If the content is present, investigate the viewport, clipping, background, and output settings. Puppeteer’s documentation describes these checks but does not identify a single cause for every blank capture.
1. Confirm that navigation reached the intended page
A resolved page.goto() call does not by itself prove that the expected website rendered. Puppeteer documents that navigation can succeed for about:blank; it also notes that, in headless shell, valid HTTP error responses such as 404 and 500 do not themselves make navigation throw. A same-URL hash navigation or about:blank can produce a null response. Log the final URL and response status before investigating the image. See the Page.goto() documentation (Puppeteer 25.12.0).

const response = await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
console.log({ requested: url, final: page.url(), status: response?.status() });
If the final URL is unexpected, inspect redirects, the supplied URL, and any authentication or routing requirements. If the status is an error, diagnose the site response rather than treating the screenshot call as the original failure.

Before saving the image, inspect basic document content and wait for a page-specific element that should be visible. This separates a genuinely empty or not-yet-ready page from a capture-region problem.

console.log({
title: await page.title(),
bodyText: await page.locator('body').innerText().catch(() => ''),
});
await page.waitForSelector('#main-content', { visible: true });
Replace #main-content with a selector that is meaningful for your site. A selector wait establishes that the matching element appeared and, with visible: true, is visible; it does not guarantee that every image, font, animation, or application task has finished. Puppeteer documents waitForSelector() and broader page interaction patterns.
3. Wait for the site’s real readiness condition
Puppeteer’s navigation lifecycle defaults to load. Its screenshots guide demonstrates waiting for networkidle2, but that is an example, not a universal best setting. A page that continually polls or streams data may never become network-idle; meanwhile, a page may be network-idle before its own client-side rendering is complete.

- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- Use
waitUntil: 'load'when the page’s load event is a sufficient signal. - Use
waitUntil: 'networkidle2'when the site’s network activity can settle and that condition matches what the capture needs. - Use a visible, site-specific selector or application readiness signal when a particular component must be rendered.
- When the selector appears before visual assets are ready, add a targeted image/font readiness check rather than assuming the selector alone is enough.
A practical diagnostic pattern is:
const response = await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
console.log({ url: page.url(), status: response?.status() });
await page.waitForSelector('#main-content', { visible: true });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
Adapt the URL, selector, and wait condition to the application. This combines documented APIs; it is not a guaranteed fix. Puppeteer’s navigation documentation, screenshot guide, and selector documentation describe the underlying options.
4. Verify the capture area and output options
If the title, body, and expected element are present before capture, check whether screenshot settings exclude the content. Puppeteer’s ScreenshotOptions documentation describes the available options and their defaults.

- Output: confirm the screenshot call completed, the path points to the file you opened, and the format is the one you intended. Puppeteer documents Page.screenshot() separately from its options.
5. Troubleshoot browser and page failures
If content is still missing or browser errors appear, capture page and console errors as well as failed requests. These can distinguish application failures from navigation or host-runtime problems; none is automatically the cause of a blank screenshot.
page.on('console', message => console.log('console:', message.type(), message.text()));
page.on('pageerror', error => console.error('page error:', error));
page.on('requestfailed', request =>
console.error('request failed:', request.url(), request.failure()?.errorText)
);
For containerized or constrained hosts, consult Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guide. It calls out compatible dependencies on Alpine and a writable user-data directory, and strongly discourages running Chrome without a sandbox. Treat these as environment checks when the runtime indicates a problem, not as presumed explanations for every empty capture.
