Melasma may darken or relapse with sun and visible-light exposure or other triggers; post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) can persist or recur when inflammation or skin injury continues. Fading a mark does not always remove its cause, so the right prevention plan depends on what kind of pigmentation you have.
Why pigmentation returns depends on its cause
“Pigmentation” describes a visible change in skin color, not one diagnosis. Two common explanations for recurring dark marks are melasma and PIH, and they have different pathways. A mark’s appearance alone cannot reliably tell you which one is responsible.

| Pattern | What may be driving it | Management emphasis |
|---|---|---|
| Melasma | A chronic tendency that may be aggravated by sun or visible light and other triggers. | Consistent photoprotection and, when appropriate, ongoing maintenance care. |
| Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) | Darkening after inflammation or skin injury, such as acne, eczema or psoriasis; repeated inflammation or sun exposure may worsen it. | Address the underlying inflammatory condition and protect exposed skin from the sun. |
These are useful patterns, not a substitute for diagnosis. A dermatologist can help identify the cause and match treatment to it.
Sun and visible light can darken melasma again
The American Academy of Dermatology Association (AAD) says melasma can darken or return after outdoor exposure without protection. Sun exposure is one possible trigger; pregnancy, stress, certain medical conditions and some medicines, including oral contraceptive pills, are also listed as possible triggers. These possibilities do not establish what is causing an individual person’s melasma.

Visible light can also worsen melasma, particularly in people with darker skin tones. AAD notes that iron oxide helps protect against visible light. That is why a tinted sunscreen containing iron oxides may be worth discussing as part of photoprotection; it is not a guarantee that pigmentation will disappear or stay away.
For melasma, AAD recommends daily sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat. Its self-care guidance discusses sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. A 2026-issue international consensus describes photoprotection against UVB, UVA and visible light during both treatment and maintenance. See the AAD’s melasma overview, melasma self-care guidance and the consensus abstract.

Ongoing irritation can contribute to PIH
PIH follows inflammation or injury to the skin. Acne, eczema and psoriasis are examples of conditions that can leave dark marks; if the underlying problem remains active or flares again, new or worsening pigmentation may follow. A European Society of Laser in Dermatology position statement also notes that PIH can worsen with recurring inflammation and/or sun exposure.

A skincare routine that irritates or inflames the skin could contribute through this pathway. The evidence cited here does not establish that a particular common ingredient, exfoliant, retinoid or routine necessarily causes pigmentation to recur, or rank products by that risk. If a product seems to cause persistent irritation, stop treating the mark more aggressively and ask a clinician for advice.

For PIH, addressing the inflammatory condition is part of addressing the marks. Sunscreen can help minimize darkening on exposed areas. AAD explains these steps in its guidance on fading dark spots in darker skin tones; the European Society of Laser in Dermatology’s 2019 position statement on laser treatment of hyperpigmented lesions supports the limited point about recurring inflammation and sun exposure.
Melasma may need maintenance after it fades
When melasma becomes lighter, that does not necessarily mean the tendency to develop it has ended. A global consensus on melanin hyperpigmentation disorders describes melasma as chronic and supports effective treatment followed by maintenance to help prevent relapse. It supports the idea of ongoing care, but does not establish one regimen, product or duration for every person. A personalized plan matters, especially if melasma is bothersome; AAD recommends discussing treatment with a board-certified dermatologist.

What to do if dark marks keep returning
- Seek the right diagnosis. Recurring, changing or unexplained pigmentation deserves assessment rather than self-diagnosis from color alone. Melasma and PIH require different management emphases.
- Make photoprotection routine. For suspected or diagnosed melasma, use daily sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat as AAD recommends. Ask whether visible-light protection, including a tinted formula with iron oxides, fits your situation.
- Address recurring inflammation. If acne, eczema, psoriasis or another inflammatory problem is active, controlling it is part of preventing further PIH.
- Review irritating skincare habits. If your routine repeatedly leaves skin inflamed or irritated, seek advice before adding more brightening products or intensifying exfoliation.
- Ask about maintenance. If melasma has improved, discuss whether ongoing care is appropriate rather than assuming fading means the cause is gone.
Sunscreen and over-the-counter brightening products are not universal cures: causes differ, and treatment should be matched to the diagnosis.
