A folder that appears in File Explorer but seems missing from OneDrive—or remains after you change sync settings—is not necessarily a deleted or corrupted folder. Compare it with OneDrive on the web, then check which folders are selected to sync. Microsoft does not identify “phantom folder” as a specific OneDrive error; the right fix depends on whether the folder is online, syncing locally, or merely visible as an online-only item.
First, check whether the folder exists online
- Note the folder’s exact name and path in File Explorer.
- Open OneDrive on the web using the account you expect to be syncing, and look for the same folder.
- Check OneDrive’s sync status and note any error associated with the folder.
If the folder appears online, its cloud copy is present even if its local appearance or sync state is confusing. If it does not appear online, do not assume a local display issue is the explanation; the account, path, or sync status may be different from what you expect.

Check whether the folder is excluded from this computer’s sync
In OneDrive settings, open Account > Choose folders. Microsoft says the web view shows all folders, while this setting determines which eligible folders sync to a particular computer. Folder selection is specific to each computer and account. When you uncheck an eligible folder, it is removed from that computer but remains available online with its contents. Some important PC folders cannot be unchecked.

If OneDrive says the file or folder already exists
Microsoft documents an “The file or folder already exists in OneDrive” error that can occur after deselecting a folder from selective sync. Follow the steps in Microsoft’s article for that specific error before moving or deleting anything: The file or folder already exists in OneDrive.
The article’s workaround is specific to the situation it describes. Microsoft says deleting the local copy is safe in that case because the folder remains available online. Moving a folder outside OneDrive is different and may remove it from OneDrive.com. Check the web copy and follow the documented case before taking either action.

If the folder is visible but you need disk space
Visibility does not necessarily mean that a file or folder is fully stored on your computer. With Files On-Demand, online-only items can remain visible in the OneDrive folder while using zero hard-drive space. That is a storage-status distinction, not evidence that a separate phantom folder exists or that the cloud copy has been deleted. See Microsoft’s explanation in Delete files or folders in OneDrive.
When unlinking and relinking may help
If OneDrive continues to have sync problems after you check the web copy and folder selection, Microsoft says unlinking and relinking the computer can help with some sync problems. The local folders are disconnected from the cloud temporarily; after relinking, OneDrive syncs again. Follow Microsoft’s procedure and let resync finish before changing folder selection or cleaning up the local folder view: Unlink and re-link OneDrive.

What to gather if the folder still looks wrong
If these checks do not explain the behavior, collect the details needed to distinguish a local display issue from a sync or account problem:
- Windows version
- Whether the account is personal or work/school
- The folder’s full path and exact name
- OneDrive’s current sync status or any error message
- Whether the folder appears in OneDrive on the web
Without those details, the phrase “phantom folder” alone is not enough to identify a particular cause.
