OBS documents a default visibility behavior that stops playback while the source is hidden and restarts it when visible. If playback stops at the end of the list instead, check whether looping is enabled. If the source keeps playing but viewers lose the podcast, investigate audio routing and stream delivery instead. The cause depends on what is stopping; without your source type, OBS version, operating system, and symptoms, there is no single confirmed explanation.
Work out what “stops” means
When the dropout happens, look at the source in OBS and note its playback position or controls, the audio meter, and whether the problem coincides with a scene change. Then make a short local recording while reproducing it. These checks help separate a stopped media source from local monitoring silence or a problem reaching YouTube.

- The source position stops or resets: investigate the source, playlist, loop setting, and visibility behavior.
- The source meter keeps moving but your speakers go silent: the issue may be local audio monitoring rather than playback or the stream mix.
- A local recording contains the podcast but YouTube viewers hear a dropout: check OBS audio routing and YouTube’s encoder and connection diagnostics.
- The recording also loses the podcast: start with the media source, file, playlist, and scene behavior.
A local recording is a useful diagnostic, not a guarantee that every recording captures every output in exactly the same way.
Check which OBS source plays the podcast
VLC Video source: playlists and visibility
OBS’s VLC Video source supports a playlist and requires VLC to be installed. In the source’s properties, confirm that the intended files are present and in the right order. OBS documents Loop Playlist as on by default and Shuffle Playlist as off by default. If playback stops at the end of the list, check that Loop Playlist is on.

Also inspect Visibility Behaviour. OBS documents its default as “Stop when not visible, restart when visible.” If a scene transition makes the VLC Video source invisible, playback can stop while it is hidden. Choose a behavior that lets the playlist continue when hidden if that is what your scene setup requires.
If VLC Video is missing or unavailable in the source list, check that VLC is installed. OBS says 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. That is a dependency check; by itself, a VLC mismatch is not evidence that it caused a playlist to stop mid-stream.

Media Source: a single file
OBS’s regular Media Source is for an individual audio or video file, not the playlist-capable VLC Video source. Confirm that it points to the intended local file and that its own Loop property matches your intended playback. Do not assume playlist settings apply to a Media Source.

If only local monitoring goes silent
Compare the source’s audio meter with your speakers and the local recording. If the meter is active and the recording contains audio, silence in your speakers alone points toward monitoring rather than the stream mix. An OBS issue report from 2020 describes a user experiencing intermittent monitoring loss after scene changes while saying the meter indicated audio was playing in the stream. That is one version-specific report, not proof of a universal OBS bug or a guaranteed fix: OBS issue report #3108.

If the source or local recording loses the audio
Focus on the media source and file, playlist and loop settings, visibility behavior, and any scene change at the time of the failure. Reproduce the problem in a local recording so you can see whether the loss happens before the stream is sent to YouTube.
If the recording is good but YouTube viewers hear a dropout
Check that the podcast audio is routed to the output OBS sends to the encoder, then inspect the live-stream dashboard for encoder errors. YouTube’s guidance is to use the latest version of your encoder, inspect the encoder output, and check audio/video source routing. If the encoder output itself looks or sounds wrong, check encoder errors, CPU load, and the local archive. If it looks and sounds healthy, YouTube says there may be an outbound internet connection issue and recommends testing the connection: YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.

Do not confuse dropped frames with a stopped playlist
OBS describes dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. OBS drops frames to avoid buffering and keep the stream playing. That guidance concerns delivery to the server; it does not establish why an individual local playlist source stops. Check connection symptoms when the source continues playing but the stream has delivery problems, rather than treating every playlist dropout as a network fault. See OBS Help.
What to record if the cause is still unclear
Note the source type (VLC Video or Media Source), OBS version, operating system, whether the dropout follows a scene transition, whether the source meter moves, and what the local recording captures. Those details help distinguish playback, monitoring, routing, and delivery problems when asking for support.
