How to Keep Podcast Episodes in Order on a YouTube Live Stream

To control the order of prerecorded podcast episodes in a YouTube Live stream, arrange them in the playlist of the encoder that plays the files. YouTube does not use your local filenames to generate that playback sequence. In OBS Studio, add the episodes to a VLC Video source in the order you want, turn off Shuffle Playlist, and choose whether Loop Playlist should repeat the sequence.

First identify which playlist is out of order

“Playlist” can mean three different things here, and each has its own ordering controls:

What you mean Where order is controlled What to do
Local prerecorded files playing through OBS during a live stream OBS media playlist Arrange files in the VLC Video source; leave shuffle off. OBS Media Sources
Uploaded episodes designated as a YouTube podcast YouTube Studio podcast playlist Set the podcast’s video order in Studio. YouTube podcast guidance
Segments in an HLS live ingest HLS media playlist The media playlist specifies segment order for reassembly. This is not local episode-file sorting. YouTube HLS ingest documentation

If files are playing in the wrong order during your OBS broadcast, fix the OBS source. Changing a YouTube podcast playlist will not reorder the files being sent by OBS, and changing filenames is not a substitute for setting the encoder’s playback queue.

Set a local episode sequence in OBS Studio

  1. Install VLC before adding the source. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. If you use 64-bit OBS, OBS says to install 64-bit VLC as well. If the VLC Video option is missing, check this first. See OBS’s media-source instructions.
  2. Add the source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene that will play the episodes. Use its media-file list to add the recordings you want included.
  3. Arrange the files in the intended sequence. Put the episodes into the order you want them to play and verify the visible list. Do not assume OBS will infer podcast chronology from filenames.
  4. Turn off Shuffle Playlist. With shuffle off, the VLC source follows the file-list order. If the sequence still looks wrong, inspect and correct the list itself.
  5. Choose whether to repeat. Loop Playlist is on by default in the documented VLC source settings. Leave it enabled if the episode sequence should start over after the last file; disable it if playback should stop after the final episode.
  6. Preview before going live. Check that the scene plays the expected first file, that audio is present, and that playback advances through the list in the intended order. This practical check can catch a misplaced item or an unexpected repeat before viewers see it.

Order episodes in a YouTube podcast playlist instead

If your episodes are already uploaded videos and the issue is their order in a YouTube podcast, use the podcast playlist controls in YouTube Studio—not the OBS media queue. YouTube’s guidance distinguishes two show formats: episodic shows should be ordered newest-to-oldest, while serial shows should be ordered oldest-to-newest. For general playlist management, YouTube also documents reordering videos by dragging them up or down in Studio. See Create a podcast in YouTube Studio and Manage playlists in YouTube Studio.

What filenames and HLS do—and do not—control

The official YouTube Live HLS documentation describes a media playlist that specifies the order in which stream segments are reassembled. That concerns segments in an incoming HLS stream, not YouTube sorting your local episode files by filename. For prerecorded files sent through OBS, the local media playlist is the relevant sequence control. The available official documentation does not establish that YouTube Live reads local filenames and generates an episode playback order from them.

Troubleshoot the common ordering problems

  • Episodes play in an unexpected sequence in OBS: Open the VLC Video source, inspect the file list, arrange it again, and confirm Shuffle Playlist is off.
  • The VLC Video source is unavailable: Install VLC, matching its architecture to OBS; OBS specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
  • The sequence unexpectedly starts over: Check Loop Playlist. It is on by default in the documented VLC source settings; disable it if playback should end after the last file.
  • Uploaded podcast videos appear in the wrong order: Edit the podcast playlist in YouTube Studio. OBS’s local queue controls the live output, not the order of uploaded videos in a podcast playlist.
  • You mean HLS segment order, not episode order: Inspect the HLS media playlist used for ingest. It defines segment sequence for stream reconstruction; it does not sort local recordings.
