“Upcoming” usually means the scheduled YouTube Live event has not actually started. For an encoder stream, the creator must send the video feed, wait for it to appear in YouTube Live Control Room, and click Go live. For a webcam stream, the creator must open the scheduled event in Manage and click Go Live. A trailer may play on the event page before the broadcast begins.
What “Upcoming” means
YouTube labels scheduled videos that have not streamed yet as Upcoming. The scheduled watch page can be visible before the broadcast starts, including before the event’s scheduled time. YouTube Help notes that a stream scheduled for later may appear in subscribers’ feeds as upcoming: Manage live stream settings.

So seeing an event page, countdown, or Upcoming label does not mean the study stream is already playing. The creator still needs to launch the event using the workflow they selected.

Check these things first
- Is this the scheduled event page? If the event has not started, Upcoming is expected. Check the scheduled time and whether the creator has announced a delay.
- Is a trailer playing? A creator can configure a trailer for the watch page. YouTube says, “Your trailer will play for viewers on the watch page before the live stream starts.” A trailer is pre-stream content, not the live study broadcast.
- Is it a Live event or a Premiere? A live stream is real-time media; a Premiere is a new video watched with the creator and community. The title alone does not establish which format the creator set up. See YouTube’s explanation of watching live streams.
If the creator is streaming with an encoder
An encoder can be software or standalone hardware. The creator—not a viewer—needs to complete both the feed connection and the YouTube launch step. YouTube’s instructions are in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

- Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
- Open the scheduled stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm the encoder is configured with the stream’s YouTube server URL and the correct stream key.
- Start sending the feed from the encoder. Starting the encoder sends video to YouTube, but does not by itself necessarily make the event live to viewers.
- Wait for the preview. YouTube’s guidance is: “In Live Control Room, wait for the stream preview to show up, and then click Go live.”
- Click Go live in Live Control Room. Once the creator launches the scheduled event, viewers should see the live broadcast rather than only its Upcoming state.
If the creator is streaming with a webcam
For a scheduled webcam stream, the creator launches the event from YouTube Studio’s Live controls. YouTube’s instructions are in Create a live stream via webcam.
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live tab.
- Select Manage, then choose the scheduled stream.
- Click Go Live to start that event.
If you’re watching and it still says “Upcoming”
- Refresh the watch page after the creator has launched the stream.
- Check whether the scheduled time has passed; the schedule alone does not start the broadcast.
- Ask the creator whether they are using an encoder or webcam and whether they have completed the corresponding launch steps above.
- If video is already playing before the broadcast starts, it may be the configured trailer rather than the study stream.
- Verify that the event is a Live stream and not a Premiere.
Viewers cannot switch an event from Upcoming to live themselves. If the creator has not launched it, the remaining fix is on the creator’s side.

Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded study videos looping on YouTube, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube.
