Linux does not automatically change a page’s CSS font-size. A screenshot can look as though text is larger or smaller because the capture uses a different pixel scale, browser zoom changes layout, a different font is rendered, or the browser sees a different viewport or environment. Start by comparing the page’s computed styles and rendered font; then check zoom, viewport, device scale factor, and screenshot output scale.
First separate CSS size from screenshot size
CSS pixels, device pixels, and screenshot pixels are related but not interchangeable. A screenshot can have different pixel dimensions without any change to the page’s CSS layout. Conversely, browser zoom can alter how CSS pixels map to device-independent pixels and can change layout itself.

In Playwright, page.screenshot supports scale: "css", which produces one image pixel per CSS pixel, and scale: "device", which produces one image pixel per device pixel. The documented default is "device". Playwright browser contexts expose deviceScaleFactor, documented with a default of 1. Compare captures with explicit, matching settings rather than assuming their PNG dimensions represent the same CSS dimensions. See Playwright’s screenshot options and browser context options.

Browser zoom is a separate variable: Chromium documents that it changes the size of a CSS pixel relative to a device-independent pixel and changes page layout. Pinch zoom is different; it is applied after rendering and does not interact with layout. Screenshot scale, in turn, controls how rendered content maps to output pixels. Do not treat these three settings as synonyms. See Chromium’s zoom documentation.

Check these causes in order
1. Computed styles and actual font
The same CSS font-family list can resolve to different installed fonts on different machines. Different glyph shapes and font metrics can make characters appear larger, change line spacing, or wrap text at different words even when the declared CSS font size matches. Check both the computed font-family and the browser’s rendered-font information; also confirm that any intended webfont loaded successfully. A computed family list alone does not prove which font supplied the displayed glyphs.
For a quick in-page comparison, run this in the browser console, replacing the selector with the element you are investigating:
const el = document.querySelector(".target");
const style = getComputedStyle(el);
({
fontSize: style.fontSize,
fontFamily: style.fontFamily,
lineHeight: style.lineHeight,
rect: el.getBoundingClientRect().toJSON(),
devicePixelRatio: window.devicePixelRatio,
viewport: { width: innerWidth, height: innerHeight }
});
Run it in both environments on the same page state. If computed font size differs, investigate CSS rules, zoom, responsive conditions, user preferences, and capture configuration. If computed size matches but the lettering or wrapping differs, investigate the rendered font, font loading, font metrics, and available layout width.

2. Browser zoom
Check whether the browser or automation context applies zoom. Because Chromium zoom affects layout, it can change both apparent text size and line wrapping. Record the zoom setting separately from device scale factor and screenshot scale.
3. Viewport and responsive layout
A different viewport can place the page on the other side of a responsive breakpoint, changing font rules or available line width. In Playwright, set the viewport before navigation when the page may respond to it. Compare viewport width and height, not only the screenshot’s final pixel dimensions. See Playwright’s viewport documentation.
4. Device scale factor and screenshot scale
Record window.devicePixelRatio, the context’s deviceScaleFactor, and the screenshot’s scale option. A high-DPI or device-scale capture can produce a larger image while preserving the same CSS layout. For visual comparisons intended to map CSS pixels one-to-one to image pixels, explicitly use scale: "css".

5. Browser, host, and headless settings
Rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Playwright explicitly cautions that these factors can affect browser rendering. Keep the Linux image, browser version, installed fonts, settings, and headless state aligned with the comparison baseline where possible. If pixel-level comparison is essential, maintain separate baselines for different browsers and platforms; Playwright notes that screenshots can differ across them because of rendering, fonts, and other factors. See Playwright’s visual comparison guidance.

6. User agent and automation presets
Check whether a device preset or custom user agent is in use. Playwright notes, for example, that its “Desktop Chrome” device preset uses a Windows-specific user-agent string. A user-agent-dependent stylesheet or server response can therefore produce different page output. Inspect user agent alongside viewport and device parameters rather than assuming the preset merely changes screen dimensions. See Playwright’s emulation documentation.
Make the Linux comparison reproducible with Playwright
Use the same browser build, viewport, device scale factor, and screenshot scale for both runs. Set the viewport before loading the page, then capture with an explicit CSS-pixel scale when the comparison is about layout rather than device-pixel output. This Node.js example uses Playwright’s documented API:

const { chromium } = require("playwright");
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
const context = await browser.newContext({
viewport: { width: 1280, height: 800 },
deviceScaleFactor: 1
});
const page = await context.newPage();
await page.goto("https://example.com", { waitUntil: "networkidle" });
const metrics = await page.evaluate(() => {
const el = document.querySelector(".target");
if (!el) throw new Error("Target selector .target was not found");
const style = getComputedStyle(el);
return {
fontSize: style.fontSize,

});
console.log(metrics);
await page.screenshot({ path: "linux-shot.png", fullPage: true, scale: "css" });
await browser.close();
})();
Install Playwright in the project and install its browser binaries as described in the official getting-started guide. Replace the example URL and selector with the page and element under test. If the page never reaches network idle, use an appropriate readiness condition for that site rather than treating a timeout as evidence of a font problem.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you observe | Likely distinction to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Text CSS size differs between runs | Stylesheet cascade, responsive breakpoint, browser zoom, user preferences, or page configuration | Compare computed font-size, viewport, zoom, and page state before changing CSS. |
| Computed size matches, but letters look larger or different | Font fallback, missing or unloaded webfont, or different font metrics | Inspect the rendered font and font-load state; align installed fonts in the Linux environment. |
| Text looks the same, but screenshot dimensions differ | Device scale factor or screenshot scale |
Record both values and use scale: "css" for one output pixel per CSS pixel. |
| Wrapping or layout differs around a breakpoint | Viewport or user-agent-dependent page output | Set viewport before navigation and compare the user agent and responsive rules. |
| Only Linux or CI pixel snapshots fail | Host OS, browser build, installed fonts, headless mode, or other environment variation | Align the rendering environment or use a separate baseline for that platform/browser combination. |
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its one-call API can capture the page without installing Playwright in your project; its documentation lists the available request options. This example requests a WebP capture:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers say which page verdict applied and whether it was billed. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Those convenience features do not replace matching viewport, font, browser, or output-scale settings when the goal is a controlled cross-platform comparison.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Linux apply a different CSS font size by default?
No. A different computed size points to page styles or browser configuration; a visual difference alone does not establish that CSS font size changed.
Should I use separate screenshot baselines for Linux and Windows?
For pixel-by-pixel comparisons, separate platform or browser baselines are often more reliable because font and rendering differences can persist even with matching CSS dimensions.
