Build a scheduled n8n workflow that reads competitor product URLs from Google Sheets, fetches each permitted page, extracts and validates its displayed price, compares it with the prior observation, and records both an append-only history and a current value. Send an alert only when a valid change crosses a threshold you choose. The workflow must treat missing or ambiguous extraction as an error—not a price change.
Plan the data before building the workflow
Separate the watch list, current prices, and observation history. Keeping history append-only makes changes auditable; keeping one current row per product makes the latest value straightforward to query.

Create a Google Sheets tab with one row per product variant. Useful columns are:

- Competitor and product: enough context to identify what is being monitored.
- URL: the product page or permitted source endpoint.
- Currency: the expected currency, such as INR, rather than an assumption based on the symbol alone.
- Expected price label or selector: where the workflow should look, if the page has a stable selector.
- Cadence and active flag: how often to check and whether the row should be processed.
Use separate rows for variants whose size, model, seller, or other offer context differs. Otherwise, a change in the selected variant or seller can look like a price movement when it is not.

History and current-state tabs
For each observation, retain a timestamp, product key, competitor, URL, price, currency, previous price, difference or percentage, and extraction status. Where practical, also retain the exact extracted text or a reference to the page snapshot. A later n8n template describes storing snapshots or normalized fingerprints as evidence for detected changes; that is a template design idea, not independently verified performance evidence. Keep the current-state tab keyed by product key and update or upsert that row after a valid observation. Do not append a new current row on every run. Google Sheets’ values.append method is intended to add values after the last row of a logical table, making it suitable for observation history. Google Sheets values.append reference.
Build the n8n workflow
The n8n community example uses a schedule, Google Sheets, a loop and delay, page retrieval and extraction, comparison, history append, and current-sheet update. Its daily-at-8-AM schedule and 20-second delay are examples, not universal recommendations or permission to request pages at those intervals. Select cadence according to the target site’s published conditions and your operational need. View the n8n example workflow.

- Schedule: Add a Schedule Trigger at the cadence you have selected.
- Read active products: Use Google Sheets to read the watch-list rows, then filter to active rows.
- Control the request rate: Process a small batch or one URL at a time, with a deliberate delay where needed. Handle redirects, HTTP errors, blocks, and timeouts; do not repeatedly retry a blocked page.
- Fetch the page or permitted endpoint: Prefer an official API or feed where the retailer provides one. If retrieving a page, respect the site’s terms, access controls, and published conditions.
- Extract and normalize: Read only the intended price field. Convert the displayed amount into a numeric value while retaining the displayed text and currency context.
- Validate before comparison: Reject empty, ambiguous, malformed, or implausible values. A changed page layout should produce an extraction error, not a price alert.
- Compare: Compare the validated value with the prior value for the same product key and currency. Apply an absolute or percentage threshold if a notification should require a meaningful move.
- Write results: Append a timestamped observation to history and update the matching current-state row. Include extraction status so failures are visible rather than silently treated as unchanged prices.
- Notify selectively: Send an alert only after validation and threshold checks pass. Include the product, current and previous price, currency, timestamp, URL, and any relevant uncertainty.
Choosing a source and cadence
Before choosing page retrieval, compare it with an official API or feed: consider whether access is permitted, how stable the data fields are, what cadence is allowed and practical, and whether discounts, sellers, variants, shipping, and currency are represented consistently. The cited workflow examples do not establish that any specific Indian retailer endpoint is available or suitable.
Handle prices as structured observations
A number alone is not enough to establish a comparable price. Keep the currency with the value, and define what the monitored price means: for example, the displayed offer for a particular model and seller, rather than an unspecified product-family price. If a page offers several variants or sellers, use a stable selector or source field that matches the watch-list row.
Preserve enough evidence to diagnose a suspected move. The extracted text, observation time, product URL, selector or field used, and a snapshot reference can help distinguish a genuine price change from a changed page layout or a different offer. If extraction is uncertain, record a failed or ambiguous status and do not overwrite the last known valid current price.

Keep Google Sheets API use within limits
Google for Developers publishes limits of 300 read requests per minute per project and 300 write requests per minute per project, with 60 reads and 60 writes per minute per user per project. The same guidance recommends a maximum request payload of 2 MB for speed and truncated exponential backoff for quota-related errors. These API limits and recommendations can change; check the current Sheets API usage limits before deployment.

Requests that exceed the rate limit can return HTTP 429. Batch reads and writes where practical instead of making a spreadsheet request for every field, and bound retries with increasing delays up to a maximum. Retrying a Sheets quota error is different from retrying a blocked retailer page: do not create a rapid retry loop against either service.
India-specific compliance and data considerations
The Department of Consumer Affairs lists the Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020 and amendments on its consumer protection legislation page. That is a reason for Indian commercial operators to check applicable requirements, not a legal determination that a particular monitoring method is permitted or prohibited. Site terms, access controls, published APIs or feeds, and intended use all matter. Seek qualified legal advice for high-stakes deployment.

- No price extracted: The selector may no longer match, the intended offer may not be present, or the page may have returned a different response. Mark extraction as failed, retain the URL and diagnostic evidence, and update the selector only after confirming the right price field.
- Price alert looks implausible: Check the currency, decimal convention, variant, seller, discount context, and extracted text. Do not update current state or alert until the observation passes validation.
- HTTP error, block, or timeout: Record the failed fetch and stop unbounded retries. Reassess whether the source permits the chosen access method and cadence, and prefer a published API or feed if available.
- Repeated current rows: The update step is appending instead of matching by a stable product key. Keep append behavior for history and use an update or upsert for the current-state row.
- Google Sheets returns HTTP 429: Reduce request volume, batch operations, and use bounded truncated exponential backoff as Google recommends.
- Unexpected notifications after a page redesign: Treat missing or changed structure as an extraction failure. Store evidence and require a valid parsed value before the comparison and notification branches.
