First find out whether the file itself is blank: open the same PDF in another reader. If it is blank there too, troubleshoot the page and converter; if other PDFs also look blank in the original app, troubleshoot the viewer.
First determine whether the PDF or the viewer is blank
- Open the same saved PDF in another browser or PDF reader.
- Open a different, known-good PDF in the original viewer.
- If possible, open a local PDF as well as one displayed from a website.
If only the converted file appears blank across viewers, investigate the source page and conversion process. If multiple PDFs appear blank in one viewer, the viewer or browser is the more likely place to start. Adobe’s troubleshooting advice includes refreshing, comparing another PDF, testing a local file, and trying another browser: Adobe’s guide to displaying PDFs in a browser. It was last updated September 30, 2022, so exact controls may differ in current software.

Check whether the webpage finished rendering
A page can appear to load before its JavaScript has filled in all the content. If conversion starts too soon, the PDF may capture an empty or incomplete page. If you control the converter
- Wait for the specific content you need, such as a chart, article body, or results container, to appear before requesting the PDF.
- Use a wait-for-selector, an application-ready signal, or an appropriate delay if your converter supports it. A navigation event alone does not necessarily mean all asynchronous page work is complete.
- Compare an immediate conversion with one performed after the content is visibly ready, keeping the URL and other settings unchanged.
Do not assume a longer fixed delay is always a solution: it may add time without resolving a failed script or blocked request.

Inspect print-specific CSS
Some converters render a page using print styles, which can hide content or change its layout. Puppeteer’s documentation states that Page.pdf() “Generates a PDF of the page with the print CSS media type.” See the Puppeteer Page.pdf() API.
What to look for
@media printrules that set content or a parent container todisplay: none.- Text and background colors that become indistinguishable, such as white text on a white page.
- Print-only layout rules that move content off-page, collapse a container, or suppress a component.
Inspect the page with print emulation or the browser’s print preview if available. If you use Puppeteer and want the screen layout instead, its PDF documentation describes selecting screen media before generating the PDF. Treat that as a diagnostic test: print and screen styles can be intentionally different, and the right mode depends on the output you want.

Check markup, renderer support, and page resources
Markup and renderer limits
PDF engines do not all support the same HTML and CSS features. Salesforce’s Visualforce guidance notes that invalid HTML can cause PDF rendering to fail and documents constraints specific to that renderer: Salesforce Visualforce PDF considerations. Validate the source markup and check the actual converter’s supported features rather than assuming every browser capability is available in its PDF engine.
Scripts, fonts, images, and cross-origin requests
A page may depend on resources hosted on another origin. PDF.js documentation explains that same-origin policy affects cross-origin requests and that browser feature support affects PDF feature support: PDF.js FAQ. In the conversion environment, check whether required scripts, fonts, images, and stylesheets successfully load. A missing resource can change the rendered page, though it does not by itself establish the cause of every blank PDF.

Conversion settings
Settings such as encoding, page size and orientation, colors, image conversion, and expansion of scrollable blocks can affect the result. Adobe documents these options for web-to-PDF conversion in its webpage conversion settings guide. Review settings that apply to your converter, but do not treat them as proof that one setting caused a completely blank file.
Compare conversion attempts one variable at a time
To isolate the problem, keep the source URL fixed and change only one condition per attempt:

These are diagnostic comparisons, not universal fixes. Record the renderer and settings for each attempt so you can tell which change affected the output.

- The same PDF is blank in several viewers: focus on the conversion output. Check content readiness, print styles, renderer support, and resource loading.
