To create a PDF from a webpage with page numbers and headers, open the browser’s Print dialog, choose a PDF destination, turn on headers and footers, and check the preview before saving. In Microsoft Edge, the documented setting adds the current date to the header and the page number to the footer. Firefox also offers print headers and footers when saving to PDF.
Save a webpage as a numbered PDF in Microsoft Edge
- Open the webpage you want to save.
- Open Settings and more > Print, or press Ctrl+P on Windows or Command+P on macOS.
- Expand More settings and select Headers and footers.
- Check the preview. Adjust paper size, margins, or scale if the content is clipped or breaks awkwardly across pages.
- Choose the PDF destination or save option shown in the print dialog or system dialog, then save the file.
Microsoft Support says the Headers and footers option “adds the current date to the document header & adds the page number to the footer.” The exact output choices and dialog labels can vary by operating system and browser version, so follow the options shown on your device. Save a webpage as a PDF in Firefox
- Open the webpage and open its print view.
- Set the destination to Save to PDF.
- Expand More settings and enable Print headers and footers.
- Review the preview and adjust any available settings, such as paper size, scale, or margins.
- Save the PDF.
Firefox’s print controls may also include pages per sheet, simplified format where available, two-sided printing, and print backgrounds. A webpage can use different styling for print than it uses on screen, so rely on the print preview rather than expecting an exact screen replica. See Mozilla’s Firefox printing guide.
Check the preview before saving
Headers and page numbers are only part of the result. Paper size, margins, scale, and the webpage’s own print styles determine where content falls and whether it is clipped or split across pages. If the page looks cramped, try a different scale or margin setting and inspect the preview again. In Edge, Microsoft specifically recommends reviewing the preview when adjusting scale.

- If text or images are cut off at the edges, increase the margins or reduce the scale.
- If content is too small, try a larger paper size or increase the scale while checking for clipping.
- If a page is unexpectedly sparse or laid out differently from the website, the page may have print-specific styling; the preview shows what will be saved.
Use CSS for headers or page numbering on a webpage you control
If you own or maintain the webpage, CSS paged-media rules can place authored content in print margins. Chrome for Developers documents @page margin boxes and page counters, including a total-pages counter, for this purpose. This approach requires access to the page’s print styles; it is not needed just to save someone else’s webpage.
Browser-generated headers and footers can coexist with authored margin content, which may produce duplicate text. They can also be disabled in the print dialog. Leave enough page margin for the elements you want, then inspect the preview and adjust either the CSS or the dialog settings. See Chrome for Developers’ guide to printed page margins.

Add or change numbering after creating the PDF
If the browser’s built-in page number is not enough—for example, you need a different starting number or number format—you can add numbering in a PDF editor. Adobe’s Acrobat instructions describe opening the PDF, choosing Edit > Header and footer > Add, selecting a page-number format and starting number, choosing a header or footer field, inserting the number, and previewing the result. The instructions also cover adding the current date and changing its presentation. Menus can differ by Acrobat edition and version. See Adobe’s Acrobat header and footer instructions.
