If a message appears under mobile data instead of text usage—or is missing from your carrier’s text log—it may have been sent as an internet-based message rather than SMS or MMS. The exact label depends on your carrier and messaging service. A usage log can show details such as a number, message type and time, but it does not necessarily show message content.
Why a text message can appear as mobile data
“Text” and “mobile data” are separate usage categories, even when both relate to messages. AT&T, for example, says its text-usage category covers SMS and MMS sent or received over its network, while its data category covers cellular and hotspot data. It also says iMessage and Android Advanced Messaging sent over Wi-Fi do not appear in its text logs; when those services use AT&T’s mobile network, they appear as data instead. AT&T’s usage explanation is specific to that carrier, so another provider may label or display activity differently.

That distinction can make one conversation show up in different categories at different times. The messaging app alone does not determine the network path: the service in use, connection, settings, carrier support and the other participants’ capabilities can all matter.
How SMS, MMS, RCS and iMessage differ in a usage log
| Message type | How it is sent | What may appear in carrier usage |
|---|---|---|
| SMS and MMS | Carrier messaging services. Google says SMS and MMS are always sent through the carrier. | May appear in a carrier’s text-usage records when sent or received over its network. AT&T says its text category includes these messages. Google Messages support; AT&T support. |
| RCS | Can use mobile data or Wi-Fi. Google says RCS may fall back to SMS or MMS if other participants do not have RCS chats enabled. | May be treated as data rather than a regular text entry; the category depends on carrier and service configuration. Google Messages support; AT&T support. |
| iMessage | Apple’s messaging service can use an internet connection, including Wi-Fi or mobile data. | AT&T says iMessage sent over Wi-Fi does not show in its text logs, and iMessage sent over its mobile network shows as data. Apple’s support page distinguishes iMessage from carrier-provided SMS/MMS. AT&T support; Apple support. |
RCS availability on iPhone depends on software and carrier support, according to Apple. The table describes examples from the cited providers, not a universal guarantee that all carriers classify or display each service the same way.

What a carrier text log can—and cannot—tell you
A carrier usage record is not necessarily a transcript. AT&T says its text-usage details can show phone numbers, message type and the time sent or received when the message used the cellular network. It also says account users cannot see the content of text or video messages in wireless usage details. See AT&T’s explanation of wireless usage details.
Those specifics describe AT&T’s account records, not every provider’s records or retention practices. Verizon, for example, provides its own account usage and message-record information, illustrating why you should check your carrier’s documentation for the exact fields available. How to investigate an unexpected or missing entry
- Identify the category. Check whether the item is under text usage, mobile-data usage or an app-level data breakdown. Carriers may define these categories separately.
- Consider the message service. Determine whether the conversation used SMS/MMS, RCS or iMessage. Internet-based messages may not appear as ordinary SMS/MMS entries.
- Check the connection and delivery path. A service may use Wi-Fi or mobile data, and RCS can switch to SMS or MMS if participants do not have RCS enabled. On iPhone, RCS also depends on software and carrier support.
- Allow for posting time. AT&T says mobile-data use can take two to five days to post; that estimate is for AT&T, and other carriers may have different reporting timelines. AT&T usage details.
- Check your provider’s help or contact support. If an entry remains unclear, use the carrier’s own usage guidance for your plan and account. A label by itself is not enough to identify a particular message’s transport.
Why the carrier and device details matter
The available information here uses U.S.-oriented examples from AT&T, Verizon, Google and Apple. Carrier names for usage categories, account history and reporting practices can differ, and device software or service settings can change how messages are routed. Without the carrier, country, phone, software version and the exact entry, a single log item cannot be decoded with certainty.
