The most useful clue is timing. If the outage begins when the infrared (IR) or spotlight turns on, start with power and camera behavior. Reolink’s support guide describes this exact pattern: when the spotlight or IR light comes on, the camera can no longer be reached through the Reolink app or client, and errors such as “connection failed” or “Not connected” appear (Reolink Support, “Reolink Camera Offline when the Lights Come on”). That is a strong pointer, not a verdict. Other brands’ cameras can go offline at night for ordinary Wi-Fi, router, internet, setup, or app reasons, so test in a fixed order and avoid resetting anything until you have evidence.
Read the timing before you test anything
Before changing settings, write down the pattern. Each detail narrows the list of likely causes:

- Trigger point: Does the dropout start as the scene darkens, at the moment IR or the spotlight switches on, after a scheduled event, or at a fixed clock time?
- Repeatability: Does it happen every evening, or only on some nights, such as cold or humid ones?
- Access path: Does the camera fail only in the remote app, or also on a phone connected to the same Wi-Fi network?
- Indicator and error: What does the status light do at the moment of failure, and what exact message does the app show?
A dropout that repeats whenever illumination activates suggests testing power delivery and the camera’s own behavior first. Wi-Fi or internet trouble can produce the same appearance, so the timing alone does not identify the cause.
The diagnostic sequence
Work through these checks in order. Each one is reversible and can be done without a factory reset.

1. Confirm what “offline” means
In most apps, “offline” can mean the camera itself has lost power or network, or that your viewing path has failed while the camera is still running. Try to reach the camera in a second way: the manufacturer’s alternate client or browser interface, a network video recorder (NVR) monitor if you have one, or a phone on the same local network as the camera.
- If local access works but remote access does not, focus on the internet connection, router, account, or app. Do not conclude the camera has lost power.
- If neither local nor remote access works while the camera is in a known-good location, move on to power.
- Reolink’s guide for the illumination-triggered symptom also suggests changing the phone or computer’s network, the stream mode, and the software you use to access the camera (Reolink Support).
2. Check power
Power is the most common cause of a camera that works until the lights come on, because IR and spotlights draw extra current. Check these in order:
- Use the original adapter or the manufacturer-specified adapter. Do not substitute a random charger or an unrated power supply.
- Reseat the barrel connector or cable at both ends, and confirm the outlet is live.
- For battery models, check the charge level and note whether the camera dies at a consistent battery state after dusk.
- For wired PoE models, confirm the camera’s required PoE standard, test another supported port, and replace the Ethernet cable with a known-good one. Also confirm that the switch or NVR has enough total PoE capacity for every connected camera.
TP-Link’s Tapo guide calls for supported 802.3af or 802.3at active PoE at 48 V for the devices it covers (TP-Link Support, Tapo troubleshooting guide). That is brand-specific guidance. Check your model’s own specifications before buying any injector or switch, and avoid passive PoE injectors unless the camera’s documentation names them.

3. Check the Wi-Fi or Ethernet path
If power checks out, test connectivity. For Wi-Fi cameras:
- Confirm that other devices can reach the internet, and that the camera’s network name and password have not changed.
- Check the signal strength where the camera is mounted, not where you set it up. TP-Link advises: “For the best Wi-Fi signal, position the Tapo device closer to the router and away from walls, furniture, and sources of interference such as microwave ovens or Bluetooth devices.”
- Confirm the camera is on a band it supports. Many cameras cannot join 5 GHz networks, and some routers merge bands under one name.
- Check for recent router changes, such as a firmware update, a new SSID, or a changed password.
Wyze’s support page on cameras that go offline when you are away from home walks through similar router and connection checks (Wyze Support).
4. Test software and restart in a controlled order
Update the camera firmware and the app to current versions. Then restart the camera, and restart the router if other devices show network problems. Lorex advises against disassembling or repairing a camera yourself, because that may affect the warranty (Lorex Support). Ring’s offline-device guidance also recommends checking the basics before a re-pair (Ring Support, “Fixing offline devices”).

Keep the factory reset for last. Setup may have to be repeated afterward, and a reset can hide the evidence you need if you escalate later.
5. Decide whether a range extender is worth it
A range extender or mesh node is only useful when a weak signal at the camera’s mounting point is confirmed and the camera cannot be moved closer to the router. Swann’s guide says that “if moving them closer is not possible, consider using a Wi-Fi extender to expand the range of your Wi-Fi, giving better signal to your camera” (Swann Support, “Why Is My Swann Standalone Camera Offline”). Swann also recommends a signal strength of 80% or above in its app for the standalone-camera models listed in that article. That threshold is Swann’s own guidance, not a general standard.
An extender cannot fix an underpowered supply, a failing camera, an internet outage, or an app problem. If the signal is adequate and the camera still drops at dusk, return to power and camera-side checks.

6. Escalate with specific details
If the camera still goes offline after these checks, contact the manufacturer with the information it will ask for first. Reolink asks for system information and troubleshooting results when the problem persists (Reolink Support). Support will move faster if you provide the items in the checklist below.

These distinctions come from manufacturer troubleshooting guides. Exact requirements depend on the model and sometimes on the region.
What to record before you contact support
- Camera model, firmware version, and app version
- Time of each failure, and whether the outage matched IR or spotlight activation
- Status light pattern at the moment of failure
- Exact app error text
- Whether local access worked while remote access failed
- Power source details: adapter model, PoE standard, switch or NVR model, and port used
- Router model and whether the camera uses Wi-Fi or Ethernet
- Every test already performed and its result
With this record, you can tell whether the problem is power, network, or app access, and the manufacturer can pick up where your testing ended.
