A popping sound on a Mac usually comes from one of three places: Bluetooth headphones, the built-in speakers, or the computer’s cooling fans. The fastest way to narrow it down is to note where you hear the sound and what you were doing when it started. Apple documents a specific cause for popping with Bluetooth headphones, a set of basic output checks for built-in speaker problems, and separate guidance for fan noise. The sound alone does not tell you which one applies, so start by matching your symptom to the right path below.
Identify where the sound comes from
Before you change any settings, answer four questions. Each answer points to a different path.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Where you hear it: through headphones, through the Mac’s built-in speakers, or from the body of the computer with no audio playing.
- What triggers it: a video call or chat app that uses a microphone, media playback, heavy processing such as video export or a graphics-heavy game, or nothing in particular.
- Which output is selected: the Mac’s internal speakers, headphones, a USB speaker, or AirPlay.
- Which Mac you have: the chip type matters for fan guidance. Open the Apple menu, choose About This Mac, and check whether it lists a Chip (Apple silicon) or a Processor (Intel).
| Symptom | Most likely path | What it tracks | First step |
|---|---|---|---|
| Static or popping only in Bluetooth headphones | Bluetooth microphone mode | Use of a microphone by an app | Quit the app using the microphone, then test again |
| Crackling from the built-in speakers | Output or volume setup, or a speaker fault | Audio playback, selected output, volume and mute | Check app volume and the selected output |
| Rushing-air noise from the case | Fan activity | Processor load, room temperature, airflow | Confirm the chip type, then clear vents and use a hard, flat surface |
Popping with Bluetooth headphones
Apple’s support article “If sound quality is reduced when using Bluetooth headphones with your Mac” (dated 23 April 2025) states: “You might also hear static or popping sounds.” The article explains the mechanism. When an app uses the microphone built into the headphones, Bluetooth switches from a higher-quality listening mode to a mode that supports both speaking and listening. That mode reduces audio quality, and the popping can follow.
This explanation applies to Bluetooth headphones in that microphone-use situation. It does not explain popping through wired headphones or the built-in speakers, and it does not confirm that every popping sound has this cause.

Steps to try
- Quit any app that is using the headphones’ microphone, including video conferencing and chat apps.
- Play a short audio file and listen again. If the popping stops, microphone mode was the trigger.
- If it continues, open Control Center, select the Sound control, and choose the Mac’s internal speakers as the output. Then select your headphones again.
- If the problem returns only during calls, check whether the app can use a different microphone input, which keeps the headphones out of the combined mode.
Popping from the built-in speakers
Apple’s guidance for speaker problems, in its article “If the internal speakers on your Mac aren’t working,” starts with simple checks. Work through them in order and test after each one.
- Raise the volume inside the app you are using, such as a music player, browser tab, or video app. Many apps have their own volume control separate from the Mac’s.
- Disconnect headphones, external speakers, USB audio devices, and any external display that can carry audio.
- Open System Settings, click Sound, and under Output select the Mac’s built-in speakers.
- In the same panel, confirm that the output volume is up and that mute is off.
- Play audio again and listen for the popping.
Apple’s article advises arranging service if the internal speakers still do not work after these checks. Its wording addresses speakers that are not working at all, so it is a safe starting point for troubleshooting rather than a definitive explanation of intermittent popping. If the sound appears intermittently and none of these steps changes it, treat it as a possible hardware issue and move to the escalation section below.

Output routing is a common cause of confusion. Apple’s article “Change the sound output settings on Mac” lists the outputs a Mac can use: the internal speakers, connected devices, USB speakers, and AirPlay devices. A sound that seems to come from the Mac may be playing through a device you have forgotten about, so confirm the selected output before assuming a fault.

Rushing-air noise and fan activity
Apple’s article “About fans and fan noise in your Apple product” explains that fans speed up in response to internal temperature. They run faster during processor-intensive work such as video compression, graphics-heavy games, or Spotlight indexing after a migration. Warm surroundings and blocked vents also increase fan activity. Apple describes the resulting sound as rushing air and calls it “a normal part of the cooling process.”

The same article does not say that popping is normal fan behavior. If you hear a rushing sound that rises with workload, the fan is the likely source. If you hear a discrete pop that does not match workload, do not assume the fan is responsible.
Reducing fan noise
- Use the Mac on a hard, flat surface so air can reach the intake vents.
- Keep vents clear of dust, bedding, and papers, and avoid enclosing the Mac in a closed space while it works.
- Close processes you do not need during heavy work, then watch whether the fan slows down.
Apple gives different next steps for Intel-based and Apple silicon Macs when fan speed is unexpectedly high. Confirm the chip type from About This Mac before you follow any reset instructions, because a reset that applies to one platform may not apply to the other.

When to stop and contact Apple
A popping sound by itself does not prove that a Mac is damaged or unsafe. However, Apple’s cited pages do not establish a cause or a safe repair for some situations, so stop troubleshooting and contact Apple Support or a qualified repair provider if any of these apply:
- The internal speakers still fail after the output checks above.
- The sound is a discrete mechanical pop that does not follow audio playback or workload.
- The sound happens when no audio is playing and no app is using the microphone.
- You notice a burning smell, unusual heat, or liquid exposure.
Do not open the case to find the source yourself. Apple’s repair manuals are organized by model. For example, the MacBook Air (M2, 2022) repair manual, dated 8 April 2025, lists separate procedures for speakers, fans, and the audio board. Those procedures apply to that model only. When you contact Apple Support, give the exact Mac model, the chip type, the macOS version, and a description of when the sound occurs. That information determines which parts, procedures, or service options are relevant.
