A screenshot taken on a desktop computer can still show a mobile layout because the page responds to the browser’s rendered viewport and device settings—not the physical computer taking the screenshot. Check the capture’s viewport width and mobile-emulation setting first, then inspect the CSS breakpoint and automation configuration. A narrow viewport can trigger compact styles even in a desktop browser.
Check the rendered viewport before the computer
Browser developer tools and screenshot automation can run on a desktop while rendering a page with a mobile-sized viewport or mobile device settings. In Chrome DevTools, for example, Device Mode simulates mobile rendering on a desktop, and its Device Type setting distinguishes Mobile from Desktop. See Chrome DevTools Device Mode.

- Record the capture dimensions. Find the viewport width and height in the browser, test configuration, or screenshot service settings. Compare those values with the screenshot’s pixel dimensions only if you know whether the tool applies device scale or resizing; screenshot image pixels and CSS viewport pixels are not always the same.
- Check whether device emulation is active. In Chrome DevTools, inspect the device toolbar and Device Type. A mobile mode can affect rendering even though Chrome itself is running on a desktop computer.
- Set a known wide viewport and recapture. Use a width comfortably above the site’s suspected compact-layout threshold. If the layout changes, that points to viewport-responsive styling; it does not by itself identify the exact CSS rule.
Chrome’s responsive viewport lets you enter dimensions directly. Its device presets include examples such as 320, 375, 425, 768, 1024, and 1440 CSS pixels. These are convenient test sizes, not universal breakpoints or proof of the width your site uses.

Find the breakpoint selecting the compact layout
Responsive CSS evaluates the effective viewport. A media query can switch navigation, columns, spacing, or other styles when the viewport crosses a threshold, regardless of whether the screenshot was captured on a laptop or desktop.

- In Chrome DevTools, open the menu and choose More options > Show media queries.
- Use the breakpoint bars to see the media-query widths. Clicking a bar resizes the viewport to trigger that breakpoint.
- Reveal the matching rule in source and inspect the site’s own
@mediadeclaration and styles.
Do not assume a framework’s conventional breakpoint is the cause. The site’s stylesheet is authoritative. MDN’s responsive-design guide illustrates a grid layout activated at 600 pixels, but that is an example—not a universal standard or evidence of the breakpoint used by your page: MDN: Responsive design.
Inspect automation and device presets
If a test runner or screenshot API produced the image, inspect its browser context, project settings, and device preset. Playwright device parameters can include a viewport, screen size, user agent, and touch capability. A preset can set its own viewport; if you intend to override that value, set an explicit viewport after applying the preset. See Playwright emulation.

For a reproducible comparison, capture the same URL twice with explicit settings: one desktop context at a known wide viewport and one mobile-emulation context. Keep the configuration with each screenshot. Compare the results to determine whether the difference follows viewport width, device mode, or another context setting.
Check viewport metadata only for actual mobile rendering
If the page is being rendered in a real mobile browser and its responsive behavior is unexpected, inspect the document head for a viewport tag such as <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width" />. MDN explains that without device-width metadata, some mobile browsers may use a wider default layout viewport, so narrow-screen media queries may not behave as intended. This is relevant to mobile-browser rendering; a missing tag is not the default explanation for a screenshot captured from a desktop browser.

Distinguish layout from screenshot framing
A capture may show only the visible viewport or the full page. Chrome DevTools offers separate viewport and full-size screenshot capture choices. Confirm that you are comparing the same kind of capture: a full-page image is taller, but its width and responsive layout still depend on the rendered viewport. Also check the emulated viewport’s Zoom control in Device Mode, since zoom can affect how the viewport appears during diagnosis. Chrome’s capture controls are documented in Device Mode.
