Inspect and reseat the disc
- Eject the disc and check for visible dirt or damage.
- If it has a label, reinsert it label-side up. Sony’s CECH-2501B manual advises reinserting a disc that the system does not recognize.
- If the disc is dirty, gently wipe it with a soft cloth, then retry it. A soft, lint-free cloth is suitable for surface dirt; cleaning will not repair scratches or a console-side drive problem.

Confirm the disc format suits your PS3
Support for some disc formats depends on the console model. Check the CECH model number and compare it with Sony Japan’s PS3 disc-format list; its format notes include legacy-format qualifications for CECH-A00 and CECH-B00. Do not assume that every PS3 reads every older CD or DVD format.
If it is a game disc, retry after removing that game’s installed data
When a game disc will not load, Sony lists deleting that game’s installed data and trying the disc again as a troubleshooting step. On the XMB, open Game > Game Data Utility, select the relevant game data, and delete it; then insert the disc and retry. This is a software step for the game-data scenario, not a repair for a motor or laser. Do not confuse Game Data Utility with saved-game data.

Use system repair and reset steps cautiously
Safe Mode file-system repair
If basic disc and compatibility checks do not help, Sony’s reading-problem guidance includes file-system repair through Safe Mode. Sony warns that data it cannot repair may be deleted, so consider the possible data loss before proceeding. Follow the console’s instructions for entering Safe Mode and choosing the repair option.

Sony also lists initialization as a later troubleshooting step. It restores the system to its original state, so back up data you need before starting. It is not a first response to a disc that briefly spins and stops; use it only after less disruptive checks and with the consequences understood.

If the disc is stuck inside, use instructions for your model
Manual ejection differs across PS3 families. Do not apply one model’s internal-ejection instructions to another console.

CECH-2501B
For a disc that cannot be removed, the English CECH-2501B manual says: “Press the eject button for 10 seconds or longer to force the disc to eject.” It then advises turning the system off and on before reinserting a disc. This instruction is specific to the manual’s model.

Other PS3 families
Sony Japan’s manual-ejection instructions separate procedures by series: CECH-4000 models use a sliding disc cover, while CECH-2000/3000 and older A/B and H/Q/L series have different directions. Some procedures involve a screwdriver and include injury and dust-shield cautions. Check the page for your exact model before attempting manual removal. Sony Japan says paid assistance can be requested there for a disc that remains inside the console; that information is specific to Japan.

When to seek diagnosis or repair
If multiple clean, known-compatible discs show the same stopping or reading problem after the simple checks, arrange diagnosis for the exact CECH model. The official guidance cited here does not establish whether a particular laser, spindle motor, or drive assembly is at fault, so avoid buying a replacement part based only on the spinning symptom.
- Ask whether the provider has experience with your exact CECH model and can diagnose the fault before replacing parts.
- Confirm parts sourcing and whether the repair carries a warranty.
- Check service availability in your country. PlayStation Support Japan says PS3 after-service reception has ended in Japan; that notice does not establish service status elsewhere.
If using Sony support, start with the local PlayStation support site and the manual for your model. Sony Australia, for example, points users to manuals, updates, and warranty information through its support resource; it does not diagnose this specific spinning symptom.
