First identify whether your headset is the original Oculus Rift (CV1) or Rift S: their connection paths and Meta support steps differ. With a CV1, start by checking the HDMI and USB connections; with a Rift S, reboot the headset and, if needed, repair the Meta Quest Link PC app. A black display alone does not identify a specific failed part.
Identify your Rift model and the kind of blackout
The original Rift, commonly called CV1, connects to the PC through HDMI and USB. Rift S uses a different setup, and Meta’s published troubleshooting for its display issues includes repairing the Meta Quest Link PC app and checking a Windows graphics preference. If you are unsure which model you have, check the headset label or share a photo of it when asking for support.

Before changing settings, note whether the screen goes black intermittently or is black from startup, and whether audio or tracking continues. Those observations help describe the fault, but they do not by themselves establish whether the cause is a connection, software, graphics routing, or hardware problem.

Check HDMI and USB connections
Shut down the PC, then inspect the headset’s HDMI and USB leads for visible damage and make sure both ends are fully seated. Meta support specifically advises verifying that both cables are fully inserted and undamaged. If possible, test the headset with a different direct USB 3.0 port and remove any USB extension cable for that test. A different HDMI port is also a suggested check in Meta’s CV1 setup discussion.

Restart and update graphics drivers
Restart the computer after checking the connections. Meta support also recommends ensuring the graphics drivers are current. Use the driver update process provided by your graphics-card manufacturer, then test the headset again; an update is a troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed fix.
What an orange light can indicate
In a CV1 black-screen discussion, a Meta Community Manager associated an orange light with a connection or hardware-recognition problem. Treat it as a clue to check connections and recognition, not as a diagnosis of a particular failed component. See the CV1 black-screen discussion.

Fix a black screen on Rift S
Reboot, then repair the PC app
Meta support’s Rift S display-issue steps begin with rebooting the headset. If that does not help, use the repair option for the Meta Quest Link PC app, then test again. The Rift S support discussion describes these steps for a reported display issue; they are not a guarantee that the app is the cause of every blackout.

Check the Windows graphics preference for OVRServer
Meta support also recommends ensuring that the Rift S runtime uses the same graphics device as the 2D desktop. In Windows Graphics settings, locate OculusSupportoculus-runtimeOVRServer_x64.exe and change its graphics preference to the other available choice—Power Saving or Performance Mode—then save and restart the PC before testing. If the preference was already set to one option, try the other. This is a model-specific support step, not proof that graphics routing caused the problem.

If the problem is tracking or sensor detection
Use this branch only if you also see a sensor-check or tracking failure. A separate Rift S support reply suggests reseating the USB connection at the computer and the cable at the headset, checking room lighting and Windows camera permission, and confirming GPU compatibility. These checks address tracking or sensor detection and should not be treated as a universal fix for a display-only blackout.

If the screen remains black after the checks for your model, contact Meta support or seek help in the Meta Community Forums. Include the exact model, whether the light is orange or another color, whether audio and tracking still work, whether the PC app detects the headset, and which steps changed the result. That information helps narrow the issue without guessing at an internal failure. The cited support discussions offer troubleshooting suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis, failure-rate estimate, repair cost, or assurance of current replacement-part availability.
