If your iPhone 15 or later is set to an 80% Charge Limit, an occasional charge to 100% is expected: Apple says iOS does this to keep its battery state-of-charge estimates accurate. A pause near 80% has a different explanation: Optimized Battery Charging may be delaying the final charge, or heat may be restricting charging. Check which setting is active before treating either behavior as a fault.
First, tell the 80% settings apart
Apple offers two controls that can look similar but do different things. Charge Limit sets a ceiling for routine charging on iPhone 15 and later. Optimized Battery Charging learns when you typically leave your phone connected and may delay charging past 80% so it finishes closer to that time.

Apple documents an exception: when Charge Limit is set below 100%, iPhone will occasionally charge fully to maintain accurate battery state-of-charge estimates. That one-off full charge does not, by itself, mean the setting failed or the battery is defective.

When the phone is connected, it normally stops within a few percentage points of its limit. If its charge level later drops by more than five percentage points while still connected, charging resumes toward the selected limit. The occasional calibration charge is separate from this normal stop-and-resume behavior.
Why charging may pause around 80% instead
Optimized Battery Charging is waiting to finish
When Optimized Battery Charging is active, the phone uses your routine to decide whether you are likely to leave it charging for a long time, such as overnight. If it predicts that you will, it may delay charging beyond 80% and finish closer to your expected unplug time. It may not engage when your charging schedule varies or you are in a new location.

Apple says the feature needs at least 14 days to learn, plus at least nine charges lasting five hours or more at a location. Until those conditions are met, a pause near 80% may not follow the expected pattern.

The phone may be too warm
When the battery gets too warm, iOS may temporarily limit charging above 80%. Move the iPhone and charger somewhere cooler and let the phone cool; Apple says charging resumes as the temperature drops. Apple’s guidance identifies 16–22°C (62–72°F) as an ideal ambient range and advises avoiding use or charging above 35°C (95°F), which can permanently reduce battery lifespan. These are guidance thresholds, not a promise that every iPhone will behave identically at a particular temperature. See Apple’s charging and temperature guidance.

Check the setting on your iPhone
- On iPhone 15 or later: Open Settings > Battery > Charging. Check the selected Charge Limit. If it is set below 100%, an occasional full charge is the documented calibration exception. If it is 100%, check whether Optimized Battery Charging is enabled.
- On iPhone 14 or earlier: Open Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging and check Optimized Battery Charging. These models do not have the newer Charge Limit control described for iPhone 15 and later.
- If charging is paused near 80%: Consider whether Optimized Battery Charging has had time to learn your routine, and whether the phone or charging area is warm.
If charging stops altogether
A pause near a configured limit or a heat-related pause is different from a phone that will not charge at all. For a persistent charging failure, Apple recommends checking the power source and cable, restarting the iPhone, and seeking service if the problem continues.
