A form can look correct, show no browser errors, and still send a request the receiving endpoint cannot accept. The fix is to inspect the request that actually crossed the browser-to-server boundary, then compare its method, encoding, field names, value types, nesting, and wrapper with the endpoint’s contract. The controls on screen do not prove that the submitted data has the right shape.
Why can a valid-looking form still fail?
Browser validation checks some values before submission and can give users immediate feedback such as “This field is required” or “Please enter a valid email address.” But it does not establish that the request matches what the server expects. As MDN Web Docs explains, client-side checks are too easy to bypass, so submitted data also needs server-side validation.

A mismatch can occur at several different layers:
- Control checks: Is a field filled in, or does its value look like an email address?
- Serialization and transport: What method, content type, and body does the browser send?
- Server validation: Do the received fields and values satisfy the endpoint’s rules?
- Downstream expectations: Does the accepted data have the shape a later service or data source expects?
A failure at any of these boundaries can look like “the form is broken,” even when the visible controls behave as designed.
What request did the browser actually send?
Reproduce one submission and inspect its network request in the browser’s developer tools, or use the equivalent request log in your environment. Do not rely only on what the controls displayed. Record the method, Content-Type, and exact request body, then check for missing, duplicated, renamed, or unexpectedly nested fields.

HTML forms and JavaScript-driven forms can serialize the same visible values differently. A conventional HTML form commonly sends name/value pairs using URL encoding. File uploads use multipart/form-data. JavaScript can submit JSON, URL-encoded data, or FormData, depending on how it is implemented and what the endpoint expects. MDN’s POST method documentation describes the request method; its Content-Type guidance covers how the body’s media type is indicated.
- Does the request use the method documented by the endpoint?
- Does its Content-Type match the format of the body?
- Are the literal field names exactly what the endpoint documents?
- Are values the expected types, such as strings, numbers, booleans, arrays, or objects?
- Are required values absent, repeated, or nested differently than expected?
For example, a field displayed as “Age” might be sent under a different key than the API expects, or a number-like value might arrive as text. Neither issue can be diagnosed reliably from the visual layout alone.

Does the payload match the endpoint’s shape?
Compare the captured body with the authoritative request schema or API documentation. Check not just individual fields but also the overall structure: a flat object, nested object, array, or wrapped value are different shapes.
For instance, an array like [{"id":1}] is not equivalent to an object that contains that array, {"data":[{"id":1}]}. In a documented API-testing example, schema checks fail when the response includes a data wrapper but the schema expects a plain array. The same principle applies when diagnosing a request: the parser or schema must describe the shape actually sent, or the sender must produce the shape the endpoint requires. When a JSON body is involved, JSON Schema can express machine-readable expectations for its structure and values. For APIs described with OpenAPI, a schema can document those expectations as part of the API definition. Validate the captured payload against the endpoint’s schema instead of inferring the contract from the form.
Where should validation happen?
Keep immediate feedback in the browser, but treat the server as the trusted validation boundary. A browser check helps a user correct an empty or malformed field; it cannot be relied on to protect the endpoint or guarantee valid input. A caller can bypass the page and send a request directly, so server-side validation must check the received data.

For JSON inputs, validation can include structural rules from a JSON Schema as well as application-specific business rules. A payload may be valid JSON and still violate the endpoint’s contract—for example, because a required key is missing or an array appears where an object is required.

Once the mismatch is understood, test the boundary representation, not only the form’s controls. A useful automated test submits or constructs the same method, headers, and body the endpoint will receive, then checks that the request satisfies the contract.

- Capture a failing request. Save its method, Content-Type, and body so the defect can be reproduced.
- Identify the authoritative contract. Use the endpoint’s current schema or API specification, including its required fields and wrapper shape.
- Test the serialized request. Verify names, types, nesting, requiredness, and encoding at the server boundary.
- Run checks with changes. Where the architecture supports it, run schema or contract checks in automated tests or CI.
- Version and review contract changes. When constraints evolve, review compatibility between versions so a form and its receiver do not silently diverge.
Versioned data contracts are one optional way to make expectations reviewable and testable; they are not a prerequisite for every web form. For data sources and APIs that benefit from explicit contracts, the Open Data Contract Standard is the current successor to the older Data Contract Specification repository, which carries a deprecation notice. Avoid basing new version-specific instructions on the deprecated specification.
