A fan heater may smell when switched on because dust or lint collected during storage is heating up. But a distinctly burning, persistent or worsening odor is not something to keep testing: switch the heater off, unplug it and leave it unused until its condition has been checked. The smell alone cannot confirm that a heater is safe.
Why a fan heater may smell when it starts
A fan heater heats air with a wire coil and blows it into the room. Dust or fluff on or near the airflow path can heat up when the unit is used after sitting unused. Dust is a plausible explanation, not a guarantee that an odor is harmless. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s assessment of portable electric-heater instructions notes that some manuals direct users to remove accumulated dust or lint, while cleaning instructions and frequency vary by model. It does not establish a universal time or number of uses for a normal startup odor to disappear: CPSC assessment of portable electric-heater instructions.

CPSC also gives general advice that people may consider leaving home until it airs out when seasonal heating is first turned on. That broad guidance is not a diagnosis of an individual fan heater or confirmation that it is safe to use.

When to switch it off and unplug it
Stop using the heater if the odor is distinctly burning, persists or gets worse, or occurs alongside warning signs such as smoke, unusual noise, visible damage, a hot plug or socket, or a tripped breaker. Unplug it and contact the manufacturer, retailer or a qualified repair technician for advice. Do not keep running it to see whether a burning smell clears.
- If there is smoke or fire, leave the area and contact emergency services.
- If the odor continues after the heater is switched off, have it assessed before using it again.
- If the heater or its plug looks damaged, do not plug it back in while seeking advice.

How to check and clean it safely
- Switch it off and unplug it. Let the heater cool fully before inspecting it.
- Check the exterior grilles. Look for visible dust or fluff and make sure nothing is blocking the air intake or outlet. Keep airflow unobstructed when the heater is in use.
- Read the instructions for the exact model. Follow its cleaning method. Some manuals permit vacuuming dust or lint, but instructions differ; do not assume you can open the case or clean internal parts yourself. A vacuum with a soft brush is appropriate only if the manual permits it.
- Stop and seek service if warning signs remain. A persistent burning odor, unusual noise, visible damage or hot plug or socket needs advice from the manufacturer, retailer or a qualified repair technician—not more cleaning.
- Check for a recall when relevant. Search using the exact make and model, particularly if the heater is old or behaving abnormally, and follow any official recall remedy.
Could the heater be recalled?
Some heater faults are product-specific and cannot be fixed by cleaning. For example, a CPSC notice dated September 12, 2024, said a fan malfunction in certain Cadet Apex72 heaters could prevent the fan from turning on, leading to overheating and internal ignition. The notice instructed owners of affected models to stop using them and seek the specified replacement remedy.
