A black YouTube stream from an Amazon EC2 instance can start at the captured source, the encoder, YouTube’s ingest, or viewer playback. The quickest way to find the fault is to compare those stages in order: inspect the source on the EC2 desktop, the encoder preview, YouTube Live Control Room, and the published playback. The first stage that turns black tells you where to focus; the title alone does not identify a specific cause.
Find the first place the video turns black
Check the same moment in each view, and note whether audio continues. YouTube recommends checking the encoder output and Live Control Room preview before and during a stream, and monitoring stream health (YouTube: stream settings and troubleshooting; YouTube: troubleshoot live stream errors).

- EC2 desktop or source: Is the intended display, game, window, browser, or media actually visible there?
- Encoder preview: Does the scene show the picture that should be sent?
- Live Control Room preview: Does YouTube receive that picture?
- Published playback: Is the stream black for viewers even though the Live Control Room preview looks right?
If you can, make a short local recording with the encoder and inspect it too. A black local recording points toward the selected source or encoder output; a good recording alongside a black YouTube preview shifts attention to stream output and the outbound connection. If both previews look correct but only playback is black, check the playback context rather than changing capture settings immediately. That last split is a diagnostic inference, not a confirmed explanation for any particular EC2 setup.
If the source or encoder preview is black
Verify the selected capture source
Make sure the intended source is enabled in the scene and that the scene is the one actually being sent. Confirm that the correct display, window, game, browser, or media source is selected and visible. The title does not establish that you use OBS, or which source type, operating system, or encoder is involved, so treat these as checks rather than a diagnosis.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
If you do use OBS Game Capture, follow the OBS guidance for blank Game Capture sources. For display capture on a system with multiple graphics adapters, OBS has separate, OS- and version-specific advice about capture methods and adapter-related issues (OBS: multiple-adapter compatibility). Do not apply Windows laptop instructions to an EC2 environment unless they match your operating system and setup.
Check the instance’s GPU and driver match
If the EC2 instance is GPU-backed, identify its exact instance type and operating system before changing drivers. AWS says GPU workloads require appropriate drivers, and the driver category depends on the instance family and OS. Consult the AWS NVIDIA driver guidance and its accelerated computing instance documentation for the applicable combination. A black screen by itself does not prove a driver is missing or that a particular driver will fix it.

If the encoder preview is black, degraded, or choppy
YouTube advises checking the audio and video sources routed to the encoder, looking for encoder errors in the live dashboard, checking CPU load, and updating encoder software (YouTube troubleshooting). Compare the preview with a local recording where available: this helps establish whether the picture is already wrong before it reaches YouTube.

If OBS reports encoding overload or the output is choppy, simplify the scene, reduce unnecessary GPU-heavy activity, and consider reducing source resolution. OBS also lists performance checks in its encoding performance troubleshooting guide and explains GPU overload issues. These are useful performance checks, but overload is not proof of the cause of every black screen.

If the encoder looks right but YouTube is black
Check Live Control Room stream health and the outbound network path from the EC2 environment. YouTube notes that when the encoder stream looks healthy but the stream has problems downstream, outbound internet connectivity may be involved (YouTube troubleshooting). Avoid changing capture sources blindly when the encoder preview is already good.
Confirm that the encoder is using the current YouTube stream key and matching stream configuration if the stream will not start. YouTube’s start-error guidance recommends replacing a stale or invalid key when applicable (YouTube live stream errors). Never share the stream key; anyone who has it may be able to send a stream to your channel.

The built-in cable features 26AWG (2C) + 30AWG (1P) tinned copper conductors, ensuring excellent conductivity and corrosion resistance, enhancing durability, and reducing signal loss
YouTube recommends testing settings before an event and monitoring stream health. Use RTMPS where your encoder supports it. YouTube transcodes incoming live streams into output formats for viewers, so a healthy local preview and a black public playback should be investigated as separate stages (YouTube troubleshooting; YouTube live streaming guidance).
Check the stream’s content and YouTube rules
A technically working stream can still be interrupted or restricted for policy reasons. Before repeatedly restarting, check Live Control Room alerts and make sure the material you are streaming is authorized for live use. Copyrighted music or video can trigger claims or other action, and repeatedly looping material does not itself establish permission to broadcast it. YouTube’s encoder and stream-health diagnostics are for technical faults; they do not determine whether you have the rights to the content.

Common symptoms and what to check next
| What you see | First checks |
|---|---|
| Source and encoder preview are both black | Confirm the selected/enabled source and scene; if GPU-backed, verify the instance family and compatible driver guidance. |
| Encoder preview is black, but the desktop source is visible | Check capture selection and encoder errors; consult the relevant OBS capture instructions only if you use OBS and the guidance matches your OS/source. |
| Encoder preview is good, YouTube preview is black or unhealthy | Inspect stream health, encoder output, stream key/configuration, and EC2 outbound connectivity. |
| Control Room preview is good, published playback is black | Check the playback device, app/browser, and viewer context separately; the symptom alone does not identify which is at fault. |
| Picture is intermittent or choppy, with overload warnings | Reduce scene complexity and competing GPU work, check CPU load and encoder errors, and test again. |
When you need setup-specific help
If the checks do not isolate the stage, gather the details that determine the next step: exact EC2 instance type, operating system, encoder name and version, capture source and method, GPU/driver version, whether audio continues, where the black screen first appears, and whether a local recording is also black. Without those facts, a specific command or driver recommendation would be guesswork. AWS driver support varies by instance family and OS, and capture troubleshooting varies by encoder and source.
Or let it run in the cloud
