A 4K TV can only show the detail present in the picture it receives. Low-resolution or heavily compressed video may look soft even when the TV enlarges it to fill the screen. If the blur appears only on one app, channel, or HDMI device, start with that source; if it affects several sources, check the picture settings and connections used by the affected inputs.
First, find out whether the blur follows one source
Play the same kind of scene from a known-good source, then compare it with the channel, app, or device that looks blurry. A problem confined to one program or service points first to the content or how it is being delivered. If several unrelated sources look soft, check the TV’s settings and signal path instead.

Upscaling enlarges a lower-resolution picture to fit the screen; it cannot restore detail that was never in the source. Sony notes that low-quality video can still look poor on a higher-resolution TV, and that some broadcasts described as higher quality may themselves have been upscaled. Sony’s picture-quality guidance explains this limitation.
Why does my 4K TV look blurry when streaming?
A 4K screen does not guarantee that a stream is being delivered in 4K. The service must offer the target resolution, and access to that quality may depend on the account plan. Check the service’s playback or account information for the title and plan you are using. A lower-quality stream can look soft after the TV enlarges it. Sony’s guidance covers the need for service support and, in some cases, a specific subscription plan; it does not establish one universal plan, bitrate, or internet-speed requirement. See Sony’s explanation of video quality and upscaling.

Check picture settings on the input that looks wrong
Open the picture menu while watching the affected input. TVs may store picture modes or settings separately for broadcast, HDMI, and other inputs, so a change made on one source may not carry over to another. LG specifically advises checking picture mode when troubleshooting a blurry screen; Samsung documents picture mode, picture size, and picture-clarity options. Menu names and availability vary by model.
- Switch to the channel, app, or HDMI input where the blur occurs.
- Open the TV’s Picture settings and note the current mode and relevant controls.
- Try a modest change to the picture mode or applicable setting, then compare the same scene.
- If the image gets worse, restore the previous values or use the reset option for the current picture mode if your TV provides one. Sony documents a current-mode reset on supported TVs.
There is no universal “best” picture mode or sharpness value for every TV and source. Avoid turning sharpness up indiscriminately: it does not add source detail, and the right controls depend on the model. LG’s blurry-screen troubleshooting steps and Samsung’s picture-settings guide describe their respective controls.

If only movement looks blurry, check motion settings
Separate motion blur from general softness: if a still image has acceptable detail but moving objects smear or look unclear, motion or picture-clarity controls may be relevant. Samsung lists blur reduction, judder reduction, and LED Clear Motion for supported signal types; Sony describes motion-blur reduction on certain models. These controls differ by TV and input, and changing them alters motion processing rather than correcting a low-detail source.

- Open the TV’s motion or picture-clarity settings while using the affected input.
- Make one small change at a time and compare the same movement before and after.
- Restore the previous setting if the picture looks less natural or the change does not help.
Samsung’s guide to picture settings and Sony’s picture-settings guidance describe model-dependent controls.

Why does my TV look blurry on HDMI?
If the TV’s own apps or other sources look clear but one HDMI device does not, check the entire signal path: the device’s output resolution, the TV’s input settings, and the cable’s capability for the signal being sent. On supported TVs, the signal-information screen may show resolution, scanning method, and frequency. A TV may also require an enhanced or high-quality HDMI format for particular 4K modes; the label and procedure depend on the model.
- Check the connected device. In its video or display settings, confirm that the output is set to the resolution you intend to use and that the device supports it.
- Check the TV’s signal information. If available, open the information display for the active HDMI input and verify the incoming resolution and signal details.
- Check the HDMI input format. Consult the TV’s model-specific instructions to see whether that port needs an enhanced or high-quality format setting for the desired 4K signal.
- Check the cable against the signal requirements. Use a cable rated for the format your devices are trying to send. Sony specifies a Premium High Speed HDMI cable for the high-quality 4K scenario described in its guide; that is a conditional requirement, not a fix for blurry streaming or every picture problem.
For model-specific steps, see LG’s guide to accessing 4K from an external device, Sony’s settings for higher-quality 4K viewing, Sony’s picture-quality guidance, and Sony’s HDMI troubleshooting for 4K at 50p/60p. These instructions apply to the supported products and formats they describe, not every TV or HDMI device.

If the picture is blurry across several sources
After comparing sources and checking the settings and connections for the affected inputs, consult the official support material for your exact TV model if the same blur remains on multiple known-good sources. Blur alone does not establish that a panel is defective, and there is no universal viewing-distance threshold that explains every blurry picture. LG’s blurry-screen troubleshooting guide is one model-family-specific starting point.
