To cast a live football stream, open the match in its official app and use the app’s Google Cast or AirPlay control to select a compatible TV or receiver on the same Wi-Fi network. This works only when the phone, receiver, app and specific live event all support viewing that way. If the app does not offer casting, a wired adapter may help—but it cannot override an event’s viewing restrictions.
Check compatibility before you start
There is no universal cast button. The route depends on the phone’s operating system, the TV or receiver, the streaming app and the rights for the particular match. Before buying a streaming receiver or adapter, check the app’s TV app and its Cast or AirPlay support, whether the match is available on a TV in your region, and whether the service restricts casting for that live event.

- Phone: Identify whether you have an Android phone, iPhone or iPad, and check its connector if considering a cable.
- TV or receiver: Confirm it supports Google Cast or AirPlay, or has a native app for the service showing the match.
- App and match: Check that the exact app supports the chosen route and permits that specific live event to play on a TV.
- Wired connection: Check adapter compatibility with your phone and whether the digital connection supports HDCP-protected video.
Google’s documented Cast flow lists Android 6.0 or later and iOS 12 or later as mobile-device baselines; meeting those requirements does not mean every sports app supports casting. See Google’s guide to casting from Cast-enabled apps.
Cast from an Android phone or iPhone with Google Cast
Use this route if the TV has Google Cast built in or you have a compatible Google Cast receiver, and the app carrying the match enables Google Cast.

- Connect the phone and TV or receiver to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Open the official app carrying the match and start the stream.
- Tap the app’s Cast control. Its location varies by app.
- Select the TV or receiver from the device list and wait for playback to begin.
If the device does not appear or the Cast control is missing, confirm that the app supports Google Cast, update the app, and check that the phone and receiver are on the same network. A missing control can also mean that the app or that particular event does not permit casting. Google’s instructions are at support.google.com.
Use AirPlay from an iPhone or iPad
AirPlay requires an Apple TV, an AirPlay-compatible television or a Mac, as well as support from the app or the relevant screen-mirroring flow.

- Connect the iPhone or iPad and the receiver to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Open the video app and tap its AirPlay button, then select the receiver.
- If the app has no AirPlay control, open Control Centre and choose Screen Mirroring where supported.
App restrictions still apply: Apple notes that some video apps may not support AirPlay. Its instructions, published May 20, 2026, are in Use AirPlay to stream video or mirror the screen of your iPhone or iPad.

A service can permit casting for some programs while restricting a particular live event. For example, NFL Support says that live local and primetime regular-season and postseason games on NFL+ and NFL+ Premium are accessible only on phones or tablets during those events. Its guidance says: “They cannot be cast to your television or other devices during such live events.” This rule is specific to the NFL+ events described; it should not be assumed to apply to other leagues, services or matches. When the provider restricts TV playback, switching from casting to screen mirroring or plugging in a cable does not remove that restriction. Use a TV app or another viewing route only if the service permits that event on it.

A compatible Digital AV or HDMI adapter is a wired alternative to try when wireless casting is unavailable. The adapter must match the phone’s connector, and the app must permit the stream on an external display. Before buying, verify the phone model and connector, adapter compatibility, the TV’s available input and the app’s rules for that match. A cable is not a guaranteed workaround for an event-level restriction.
