Export time depends on your project and your system together, not on video length alone. A slow export usually means one stage of the job is waiting on another. The editor decodes your source clips, processes the timeline (effects, transitions, color, compositing), and then encodes the finished frames and audio into a file. A bottleneck at any of those points holds up the whole export. The fix that speeds up one project, such as turning on hardware encoding, may do nothing for another whose limit is a heavy effect stack or a software-only codec path.
How an export spends its time
Adobe’s documentation separates timeline rendering from output encoding, and its export settings (format, resolution, frame rate, codec, and Performance) map onto these stages. Adobe does not publish a formula that predicts export time, so the model below is a way to reason about the problem, not a benchmark.

Keep rendering and encoding apart in your head. GPU accelerated rendering can handle eligible effects and transformations, while hardware encoding accelerates supported codec configurations. Turning on hardware encoding does not prove the timeline is GPU rendered, and a GPU usage reading alone does not tell you which stage is the limit.
Why a long export does not match the video’s length
Video length is a poor predictor of export time. A short sequence with many layered effects, a high frame rate, or a large output frame can take longer to export than a longer, simpler edit. Preview rendering speed is not a reliable guide either, because preview files are a separate process from the final export. Judge export speed by timing the export itself, under the same settings each time.

Common causes
The sequence asks for more processing
More frames, larger output dimensions, higher frame rates and elaborate effects all add work per second of video. Adobe’s export references list these as choices but do not quantify how much time each one adds, so treat them as the main variables to test rather than as fixed penalties.
The encoder is on a software path
In Premiere, Hardware Encoding is available for H.264 and HEVC when the machine and the specific settings support it. If a combination is unsupported, Premiere falls back to Software Encoding. Adobe’s current hardware encoding documentation (updated January 21, 2026) also notes platform-dependent limits. For example, it says some Apple Silicon and HEVC combinations, such as HEVC HLG 4:2:0 10-bit, rely on software encoding. Do not assume hardware encoding is active just because the option exists.
GPU acceleration is off or not available
Adobe’s guidance on slow rendering and playback (updated January 7, 2026) recommends Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration when rendering is slow. If that choice is missing or disabled, Adobe advises checking for a GPU driver update. For NVIDIA creative workflows, Adobe’s slow-export guidance (updated January 21, 2026) recommends NVIDIA Studio Drivers.

One effect or plugin slows one section
A complex effect stack or a third-party transition can be responsible for a single difficult passage while the rest of the timeline exports normally. Adobe’s troubleshooting guidance (updated March 5, 2026) advises temporarily removing a third-party transition or plugin when an export has a problem. Isolating the slow section is a diagnostic method, not a speed guarantee.
The machine falls short of the project or has outdated drivers
Adobe’s slow-export guidance tells users to compare their system with the software’s recommended requirements and to update drivers. A single slow export is not enough evidence that your computer needs an upgrade. Confirm the bottleneck first (see below).
How to diagnose a slow export

Record the setup. Note the editor and version, operating system, source format, sequence resolution and duration, target format and codec, and the export Performance choice. Compare like with like, or a before-and-after test will mean little.

Check the renderer and drivers. In Premiere, go to File > Project Settings > General > Video Rendering and Playback and choose Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration when it is offered. Then check for a GPU driver update.

Check the encoding path. For H.264 or HEVC in Premiere, open Export > Video > Encoding Settings > Performance and confirm whether Hardware Encoding is selected and supported for your exact settings.

Test a short, representative segment. Export a few seconds that include the slow part, using the same settings you need for delivery. Adobe’s troubleshooting guidance also suggests testing another format and switching a custom preset to a built-in preset that matches the delivery requirement.

Isolate effects and plugins. If only one section crawls, temporarily disable or remove third-party transitions and plugins around it, export the test again, and restore them afterward.

Keep quality fixed while comparing. Hold resolution, frame rate, codec, bit depth and quality constant. A faster result that comes from a lower-quality or different deliverable is not a real improvement.

Slow, stalled, or failing: treat them differently
A slow export runs but takes a long time. A stalled or failing export does not finish at all, and it calls for different steps. Adobe’s troubleshooting guidance (updated March 5, 2026) for exports that will not render or complete covers testing hardware accelerated decoding settings, trying another export format, and using Software Only rendering where applicable. Adobe warns that Software Only may slow rendering and says it is unavailable on Apple Silicon Macs. Use it to find a failing setting, not as a way to speed up an export.

Should you buy faster hardware?
Only after you know which stage limits the job. A better graphics card helps when the GPU is part of the path that is slow, such as GPU rendering or supported hardware encoding. It does not help with an unsupported codec, a software-only encoding path, or a bottleneck in a single CPU-bound effect. The sources reviewed do not support a single universal fix such as a particular GPU, SSD or memory upgrade, and they do not establish how much any upgrade would shorten a given export.

Adobe’s slow-export and hardware encoding documentation is the place to check current requirements for your version and platform, since support changes with software updates.
