1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFFmpeg may stop after the first story because the command uses the wrong concat method, the playlist script or paths are invalid, or the files do not have the matching streams, codecs, and time bases required by the concat demuxer. The title alone does not reveal which cause applies. Start by checking the method and playlist, then compare the input files and read FFmpeg’s full error output.
First, identify which concat method the command uses
FFmpeg has three concat approaches, and they are not interchangeable. The concat demuxer reads a script listing inputs; the concat filter joins streams as part of a filtering and re-encoding workflow; and the concat protocol joins resources at the file level only for formats that support that kind of concatenation.

| Method | Use it when | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Concat demuxer | You want to join files without re-encoding, and file-level concatenation is not supported by the container. | Inputs need matching stream structure, codecs, and time bases; the script and paths must also be valid. |
| Concat filter | You need to re-encode as part of joining the streams. | It requires a filtering and transcoding workflow. |
| Concat protocol | The underlying format supports file-level concatenation. | It is not a general-purpose playlist method. |
If your command uses the concat protocol for a set of ordinary video files, check whether that is appropriate for their format. For a script-based sequence, the demuxer is often the relevant method; the FFmpeg FAQ distinguishes joining without re-encoding from workflows that require the concat filter.

ffconcat version 1.0
file 'story-1.mp4'
file 'story-2.mp4'
file 'story-3.mp4'
Put ffconcat version 1.0 at the very beginning of the script, with no blank line or other characters before it, for automatic recognition. Quote or escape filenames that contain spaces or special characters. The concat demuxer documentation describes the script format and recognition rule.
Verify every entry
- Confirm that each line begins with
fileand names the intended file. - Check spelling, filename extensions, and capitalization against the actual files.
- Confirm that every listed file exists relative to the directory from which FFmpeg resolves the path, or provide a suitable path.
- Check that the playlist has not accidentally ended after the first
fileline.
Check path safety
The concat demuxer defaults to safe=1, which accepts relative paths made from a limited portable character set. If a trusted playlist needs absolute paths or characters that the safe-path check rejects, -safe 0 can allow them. Use it only after verifying every path: it relaxes a safety check, not a missing-file or malformed-list problem. See the demuxer’s safe option documentation.

Check that the story files are compatible
The concat demuxer expects each file to have the same streams, codecs, and time base. If, for example, one story has a different stream layout or codec, the demuxer may not be able to treat the files as one valid sequence. Differences can also produce artifacts rather than a clean transition. Inspect each input and compare those properties before assuming the playlist itself is at fault.

Duration information matters too: stored or incorrect file durations can affect the timestamp adjustments between files. That may result in timing problems at a boundary or make the joined output behave unexpectedly.

Choose the repair that matches the problem
- Wrong method: use the concat demuxer for a script-based join when you do not need re-encoding and the input streams meet its requirements. Use the concat filter when the workflow needs re-encoding. Reserve the concat protocol for formats that support file-level concatenation.
- Bad script or path: correct the
fileentries, put the optional format marker at the exact start of the script, and fix quoting, escaping, or path resolution. Consider-safe 0only for a verified, trusted list that needs paths rejected by the default safe mode. - Incompatible inputs: make the stream layouts, codecs, and time bases consistent, or use a filter-and-transcode approach that can normalize the files before joining them.
- Unclear failure: capture the complete command and FFmpeg log rather than changing several settings at once. The specific cause cannot be determined from the symptom alone.
What to collect if it still stops
To diagnose a particular playlist, gather the exact FFmpeg command, the complete playlist text, the FFmpeg version, the input formats, and the full error or log output. Without those details, it is not possible to distinguish reliably between a method mismatch, a rejected path, incompatible inputs, or another command-specific issue.
