eero has not published a stated reason for the two-port layout. What is documented is the port count on eero 7, which has two auto-sensing 2.5 GbE Ethernet ports. The most practical reading is that a gateway needs one connection to the modem and can spare one more port for a wired device, with any additional wired devices added through a network switch. That is an interpretation, not an eero statement, but it matches how eero’s own setup guidance expects wired expansion to work.
What the two ports on eero 7 are
eero’s product material for eero 7 lists two Ethernet ports, both auto-sensing and rated at 2.5 gigabit per second (2.5 GbE). The port count and speed belong to that model. Other eero models can differ, so check the specification for the exact model you own or plan to buy before assuming the same layout.

Why a two-port gateway is a practical design
In a mesh system, the gateway eero is the unit that connects to your modem or internet service. One port carries that upstream connection. The second port gives you a wired connection at the gateway’s location, for a computer, a game console, a media player, or a switch that adds more ports.

This is a functional explanation. eero has not said that cost, heat, size, or complexity drove the choice, and those reasons should not be attributed to the company. The explanation accounts for the layout without claiming to know the design history.

How to connect more wired devices than the gateway has ports
eero’s support guidance illustrates the supported expansion path: an Ethernet switch connected to the gateway eero, with the switch supplying Ethernet connections to other devices. Follow these steps:
- Place the switch near the gateway eero and connect it to a power outlet.
- Connect one Ethernet cable from a free Ethernet port on the gateway eero to an uplink or standard port on the switch.
- Connect your wired devices to the remaining ports on the switch.
- Confirm that each wired device obtains a connection and reaches the internet. If one does not, check the cable and the switch’s link light for that port before changing anything on the eero.
Choosing a switch
- Unmanaged is sufficient. This setup needs no configuration, so an unmanaged switch fits.
- Match the speed to the gateway port. The eero 7 ports run at 2.5 GbE. A 1 GbE switch will cap every device on it at 1 Gbps. This is a general networking point, not an eero requirement.
- Count your devices first. Add up the wired devices at that location and make sure the switch has at least that many ports, plus one for the link back to the gateway.
What a switch does not change
- It does not extend Wi-Fi coverage. Wireless devices still depend on the eero nodes’ placement.
- It does not raise your internet speed. Every device behind the switch shares the single link back to the gateway, and that link is also limited by your internet plan.
- It adds a local wired segment, not an additional route to the internet.
Ethernet ports and mesh Wi-Fi are separate decisions
A limited number of Ethernet ports does not restrict how many devices a mesh system can serve, because most devices connect over Wi-Fi. eero’s Sonos guidance is the clearest example. The support article states: “Connecting your Sonos devices using wifi is the recommended method for best performance on your eero network.”

The same article says Ethernet “may provide a better experience” for advanced Sonos systems with many speakers, described as five or more, and shows a gateway eero connected to a switch that provides Ethernet to additional devices. That is setup guidance for one scenario, not a guarantee of better performance.

Wired eero nodes are optional
eero’s placement guidance describes wiring nodes as an option in homes that already have Ethernet run to the rooms where nodes would go. It says wiring can help speed and signal strength but is not required. The size of any benefit depends on your home, your wiring, and your internet plan. This article does not include measurements of that effect.

- SETS UP IN MINUTES - Once PoE infrastructure and access points are installed, use the eero app to guide you through setup and to manage your network from anywhere.
When to use Wi-Fi and when to add wiring
Use Wi-Fi for devices that move around or that eero recommends connecting wirelessly, such as Sonos speakers in smaller systems. Add a switch when several fixed devices sit near the gateway and running cable to each one would be impractical. Wire eero nodes only where Ethernet already runs and you want to test whether the extra connection helps your coverage.
