Why Does Discord Show the Wrong Image for My Website Link?

Discord fetches page information when a link is shared. Check the exact page’s og:image and crawler access; a temporarily saved image may explain why an older thumbnail persists.

Discord’s preview image usually comes from information its bot fetches when someone shares your link, with the page’s og:image tag the first thing to check. If that tag is correct but Discord still shows an older or different image, the cause may be a saved copy of the image: Discord says it may store linked media temporarily, but does not publish a cache lifetime or promise an instant refresh.

How Discord chooses a link preview

When someone shares a URL in a message, Discordbot visits the page and gathers information such as its title, description, and image. Discord says it does not continuously crawl websites on its own; preview generation starts when a link is actually shared. See Discord’s explanation of link previews and Discordbot.

The Open Graph protocol defines metadata that site owners can place in a page’s <head>. Its basic properties include og:title, og:type, og:image, and og:url; og:image identifies the image intended to represent the page. The protocol describes these tags, but is not a full specification of how Discord parses every page.

Fix a wrong image on one website link

  1. Inspect the exact URL you shared. Open the page source or inspect the HTML the server returns. In the document’s <head>, find og:image and check that its URL points to the intended image. Do not assume the home page’s metadata also applies to a specific article or route.
  2. Check related metadata. Look at og:title, og:type, and og:url for values that are stale or belong to another page. Open Graph also documents optional image properties such as secure URL, MIME type, width, height, and alt text; the protocol is documented at ogp.me.
  3. Make sure the intended image URL is accessible. Confirm that the page actually serves the corrected metadata and that access controls are not preventing the crawler from fetching the page or its image.
  4. If you manage the site, check server logs around the share. Look for requests consistent with Discordbot and see whether the page or image request was rejected or served an unexpected response. Discord documents a Discordbot user-agent pattern, but user-agent text can be faked. For security-sensitive allowlisting, verify request IP addresses against Discord’s current published IP ranges rather than relying on a fixed list; Discord says those ranges can change.
  5. Share the URL again as a practical check. This can help you see whether the corrected metadata is being picked up, but Discord does not say that reposting forces a cache refresh.

If the metadata looks right but Discord still shows the old image

Discord says a copy of a linked image or video may be saved temporarily for faster loading and delivered through Discord’s servers. Its current support article does not give a cache duration or document a guaranteed purge or immediate-refresh procedure. There is therefore no official basis for promising that editing a message, adding a query string, or reposting will invalidate an old image. First confirm the page’s current metadata and image response, then allow for the possibility that Discord is still serving a saved copy.

If images are failing across Discord

A site-specific wrong thumbnail and a broad Discord image-loading failure are different problems. If images from many links or other Discord images fail to load for you, follow Discord’s connection troubleshooting guidance. It recommends checking DNS and considering whether an ISP, router setting, antivirus, or family-safety filter blocks Discord image services. Its examples involving BT in the UK and Xfinity in the US are examples from that support article, not a diagnosis that applies to every user.

If you need a screenshot to inspect how the page renders, ScreenshotNeo can capture a URL with one API request. A screenshot can help you inspect the rendered page, but it does not replace checking the HTML metadata Discord fetches.

For example, using the documented cURL request with your API key and the URL to inspect:
