Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →An SSD can start a large game install quickly and then slow down when its fast write buffer fills or the drive heats up and throttles. Low free space can also increase write latency. But installation time is not all SSD writing: downloading, copying, decompression, patching, and other work can affect the launcher’s progress. A falling write rate is a clue to investigate, not proof of one specific fault.
Why an SSD can start fast, then slow down
The fast write buffer has filled
Some SSDs use a fast buffer to absorb incoming writes. Samsung’s TurboWrite white paper explains that consecutive writes can fill this buffer when the drive has no idle time. Once it is full, the drive may write more slowly; buffer size and post-buffer performance vary by model and capacity, so peak speed alone does not predict a long install’s performance. Samsung’s TurboWrite white paper describes this behavior.

The SSD is getting too hot
Under a sustained workload, heat can cause an SSD to reduce performance to control its temperature. Samsung describes this behavior as Dynamic Thermal Guard, and Kingston notes that heavy NVMe workloads can trigger thermal throttling. The temperature at which a drive responds is model-specific: Kingston’s 80°C note applies to the product FAQ it documents, not to every SSD. Check the exact drive’s support information rather than treating any single temperature as universal. See Samsung’s internal SSD guidance and Kingston’s SSD support information.
The drive has little free space
When fewer empty cells are available, the SSD may need to do more work to write new data. Microsoft explains that a nearly full disk can have longer write latencies because the drive may need read-modify-write operations. There is no single free-space percentage that applies to every SSD. Microsoft’s disk-use guidance explains the relationship between available space and write latency.

The install is doing work beyond writing to the SSD
A launcher’s progress bar does not necessarily track destination-drive writes alone. Game installation can involve copying and decompressing content, and decompression uses CPU time. Microsoft’s older game-installation guidance describes those general steps, but it does not establish how a particular current launcher handles every game. Downloads, patching, and other system activity are also worth checking when the drive’s write rate falls. Microsoft’s game installation guidance covers copying and decompression.
How to diagnose the slowdown
- Identify the exact SSD. Check its model and interface, then look up its manufacturer’s specifications and thermal guidance. Buffer behavior and operating limits vary by drive.
- Watch write activity and temperature during the slowdown. If the temperature rises as performance drops, investigate cooling using the drive maker’s guidance. A changing write rate by itself does not establish that the SSD is overheating.
- Check how much capacity is free. If the destination drive is nearly full, make room and see whether write latency improves. Microsoft describes this as a possible cause, not a guaranteed fix or a threshold-based rule.
- Check what the launcher and system are doing. If destination-drive writes are low, the launcher may be downloading, decompressing, patching, or waiting on other work. Windows can also cache writes before flushing them to disk, so observed disk activity may not map neatly to each moment of the install. Microsoft documents this behavior in its file-caching guidance.
- Investigate cooling only if temperature supports it. Check case airflow and whether the motherboard already has an M.2 heatsink. Before adding one, confirm the SSD’s format, physical clearance, and motherboard fit. A heatsink may help with sustained heat, but it cannot prevent a full write buffer from slowing down.
- Consider an upgrade only when the evidence points to a drive limitation. Compare sustained-write behavior, capacity, thermal guidance, interface, and physical fit for the exact models. A headline burst-speed figure alone is not a reliable basis for choosing an SSD for long installs.
What not to infer from the progress bar
- A slower progress bar does not automatically mean the SSD is failing. Buffer exhaustion, heat, low free space, or work elsewhere in the installation pipeline can all affect the observed pace.
- A high peak-speed rating does not guarantee that speed for the whole install. Sustained writes after a fast buffer fills are a separate consideration.
- Do not assume a heatsink will fix every slowdown. It is relevant when temperatures indicate a thermal problem, not when the drive has simply exhausted its fast buffer.
- Do not use a universal temperature or free-space cutoff. Consult the exact drive’s manufacturer guidance and consider the system’s behavior under the workload.
TRIM and SSD housekeeping
SSDs use internal garbage collection to reclaim space occupied by data that is no longer valid. TRIM lets the operating system tell the SSD which data blocks are no longer needed. These are normal maintenance mechanisms, not a guaranteed cure for a slowdown during a particular install. Samsung explains both in its internal SSD guidance. Microsoft’s discussion of TRIM and UNMAP applies to the storage scenarios on that page and should not be generalized to every consumer PC: Microsoft’s thin-provisioning guidance.
