Choose the Switch 2 Pro Controller for its newer console-specific features, or consider third-party models if rear buttons or customizable lighting matter more to you. These recommendations reflect published compatibility and feature information, not comparative hands-on testing.
How to choose a Switch Pro-style controller
Start with the console you own, then decide whether you need features beyond a conventional full-size layout. Compatibility is the key dividing line: Nintendo says the original Pro Controller works with Switch 2, but the Switch 2 Pro Controller does not work with the original Switch. For third-party controllers, check the exact model and any firmware requirement before buying.

8BitDo Ultimate Bluetooth Controller: configurable controls
Choose this model if its configurable controls are more useful to you than having a Nintendo-branded controller. 8BitDo lists Hall Effect joysticks, two rear buttons, and its Ultimate Software, which offers button mapping, stick and trigger sensitivity adjustments, vibration control, macros, and profiles.
