A YouTube podcast livestream may stop when its playlist ends because the playlist or automation feeding the encoder has run out of content and stopped sending it. YouTube says that stopping content transmission from an encoder ends the stream. The precise trigger depends on the playback or automation software you use.
First, check what actually stopped
A playlist and a YouTube livestream are separate parts of the setup. The playlist supplies audio or video to a source or encoder; the encoder sends that content to YouTube. When the queue ends, the source may stop, and the encoder may stop transmitting. That is the most likely explanation, but without knowing your software it is not possible to identify the exact trigger.

- The YouTube broadcast ended: Check whether the encoder stopped sending content and whether the stream’s auto-stop setting is enabled.
- Playback ended but the broadcast stayed live: The stream may still be active, but its source has no more content. Check the playlist tool’s end-of-queue or repeat behavior.
How to diagnose and fix it
- Confirm the stream’s status. Check YouTube Studio and the public watch page to distinguish an ended broadcast from a live broadcast with no continuing playlist playback.
- Inspect the source or automation. Find the software that sends the playlist to your encoder. Look for an option such as repeat, loop, or continue after the last item. YouTube’s help pages do not specify how third-party playlist tools handle an exhausted queue, so use that software’s own settings and documentation.
- Check YouTube’s stream controls. In YouTube Studio, review the encoder stream settings, including auto-start and auto-stop, and confirm they match your intended behavior. YouTube documents these controls in its live stream settings guide.
- Verify that content keeps reaching YouTube. After changing the playlist behavior, test the end of the queue and confirm that the encoder continues sending content. YouTube’s encoder instructions state: “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.”
Why YouTube Autoplay does not fix an exhausted stream
YouTube describes Autoplay as a viewer playback feature that starts another related video after a video ends. It does not restart the creator’s playlist source or ensure an encoder keeps sending content. See YouTube’s Autoplay guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose between continuous playback and a planned ending
Keep the broadcast going
Configure the playlist source or automation to repeat the queue or supply another item, then verify that the encoder continues transmitting after the final item. The exact steps vary by software.
