Why Does a Website Screenshot Have Different Colors from the Live Page?

Screenshots and live pages can follow different color-management paths. Find the cause by checking profiles, display settings, HDR, viewers, and export steps.

A screenshot can look different from the live page because the two are not necessarily being displayed through the same color-management path. The browser renders the page for your current display; the saved image may carry color-profile information, be converted from HDR to SDR, or be interpreted differently by an image viewer or sharing service. Check the screenshot file and viewing path before changing the page’s CSS.

How colors travel from a webpage into a screenshot

The result depends on more than the CSS color values. The path can include page colors and images, the browser compositor, operating-system color management, the display, the screenshot capture method, the saved file, and the application that later opens or shares it.

Color values need context: a profile or color-space marker tells software what those values represent. CSS Color Level 4 treats HTML colors and untagged images as sRGB unless otherwise specified. A valid tagged image is treated as belonging to its specified color space. W3C CSS Color Level 4

An ICC profile characterizes a device or color space so that software can convert colors between the source and the output display. If profile information is missing or inaccurate, the displayed result can change. W3C sRGB guidance

Why the screenshot may look different

The viewer handles the image profile differently

A screenshot may contain an ICC profile or another color-space marker, or it may be untagged. Image viewers and sharing paths can interpret or convert that information differently. If the same file looks different in two viewers, the discrepancy points toward the file’s interpretation or the viewers’ color handling rather than proving that the webpage’s CSS is wrong.

The display profile is inaccurate or different

The operating system uses a display profile as part of the conversion from image colors to what the monitor shows. A wrong or inaccurate profile can affect both the live page and the screenshot, and comparing them on that display does not establish which representation is accurate. A monitor colorimeter can help when the monitor profile or display accuracy is the issue; it cannot restore a stripped image profile or fix a viewer that interprets the file differently.

Wide-gamut color is converted for another display

Display P3 can represent colors outside the sRGB gamut. When those colors are shown on a narrower-gamut display, they need conversion, and results can vary by browser and platform. The same screenshot may therefore look different on another display or in another application. WebKit’s explanation describes this color-management issue, but its historical browser comparisons are not a current compatibility chart. WebKit: Improving Color on the Web

HDR content is shown in an SDR context

A capture or image may use an HDR representation while the viewer, display, or sharing destination expects standard dynamic range (SDR). That conversion can change the appearance. Apple’s ScreenCaptureKit documentation describes an HDR screenshot output whose CGImage uses extended sRGB, but that detail should not be generalized to every Apple screenshot API or capture route. The change happens during export or sharing

If the screenshot matches the live page locally but changes after export or upload, investigate that step first. The file may be converted or interpreted differently along the way. Do not assume a sharing service strips profiles; check the before-and-after files and the applications displaying them.

Diagnose the mismatch one factor at a time

  1. Hold the page and browser constant. Capture the same page, then compare the live view and image on the same display. Avoid changing several settings between comparisons.
  2. Compare viewers. Open the file in a color-managed image viewer and another viewer. If only one shows the mismatch, focus on that viewer or its interpretation of the file.
  3. Inspect the file’s color information. Check whether it has a valid embedded ICC profile or another color-space marker. Do not assume every screenshot is tagged, untagged, sRGB, Display P3, or HDR.
  4. Establish whether the image is HDR or SDR. Check the capture route, file, viewer, and destination. HDR-to-SDR handling is platform-specific; there is no one setting that fixes every case.
  5. Check the operating system’s display profile. Confirm the selected profile matches the display. If accuracy is the concern, calibration may help address the monitor profile, but it will not repair a mismatch caused by export or viewer handling.
  6. Only then compare browsers or displays. Record the original setup first. If the page uses wide-gamut colors, account for gamut conversion and browser or platform differences.
  7. If the discrepancy appears after sharing, compare the local and shared files. Investigate the export or sharing stage before editing CSS.

Choose a fix for the stage that is actually at fault

  • Different image viewers, same file: check how each viewer handles color profiles and color-space markers.
  • Live page and screenshot both look wrong on one monitor: check the operating system’s selected display profile; consider calibration if display accuracy is the concern.
  • Only wide-gamut colors differ across setups: check the source gamut and destination display, and compare browser and platform behavior.
  • Only HDR captures differ: check whether the capture, viewer, or destination converts the image to SDR.
  • Only the shared or exported image differs: compare the file before and after that step and investigate its handling.
  • Do not change CSS as a first resort: first establish that the discrepancy is in the page’s rendered colors rather than the screenshot or its viewing path.

If you need repeatable website captures in a workflow, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server. Its API can return an image or PDF, but a screenshot service does not by itself prove that the saved file will look identical in every viewer or on every display; check the resulting file and viewing path.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do my screenshots look washed out?

A missing or misread color profile, an inaccurate display profile, wide-gamut conversion, or HDR-to-SDR handling can all change the appearance. Compare the same file in more than one viewer and inspect its color information before changing CSS.

Will switching everything to sRGB fix the difference?

Not necessarily. The mismatch may come from the display profile, capture route, HDR conversion, or image viewer. First identify the stage where the colors change.
