For a Next.js App Router site, put an opengraph-image.tsx file in the route segment whose pages need unique social previews, then return an ImageResponse built from that page’s data. Next.js can generate the image and the associated Open Graph metadata through its file convention. For pages that do not need a unique image, use a static image instead.
Choose between a generated image and a static file
Use a generated image when each page should show its own title, author, product, or other route-specific information. Use a static image when a shared preview is sufficient; it is simpler and avoids rendering a new design from page data. Next.js supports static JPEG, PNG, and GIF files in the relevant route segment, and an accompanying .alt.txt file can provide alt metadata. A more specific route-segment image takes precedence over a broader one. See the Next.js metadata file convention.

Generate a route-specific image in Next.js
Create opengraph-image.tsx alongside the route that should own the preview. For example, place it in app/blog/[slug]/ to generate a card for each blog post. The image function can use route parameters and server-side data. The example below assumes a current App Router version where route parameters are asynchronous; check the API signature against the Next.js major version installed in your project.
// app/blog/[slug]/opengraph-image.tsx
import { ImageResponse } from 'next/og'
import { getPost } from '@/lib/posts'
export const alt = 'Article preview image'
export const size = {
width: 1200,
height: 630,
}
export const contentType = 'image/png'
type Props = {
params: Promise<{ slug: string }>
}
export default async function OpenGraphImage({ params }: Props) {
const { slug } = await params
const post = await getPost(slug)
if (!post) {
throw new Error(`No post found for slug: ${slug}`)
}
return new ImageResponse(
(
<div
style={{
width: '100%',
height: '100%',
display: 'flex',
flexDirection: 'column',
justifyContent: 'space-between',
padding: 64,
background: '#101828',
color: '#ffffff',
fontFamily: 'Arial',
}}
>
<div style={{ fontSize: 24, color: '#a6c8ff' }}>FREEDOM251</div>
<div style={{ fontSize: 64, fontWeight: 700, lineHeight: 1.1 }}>
{post.title}
</div>
<div style={{ fontSize: 26, color: '#d0d5dd' }}>
{post.author}
</div>
</div>
),
{
...size,
},
)
}
Replace getPost and the title/author fields with your own data-access function and schema. Handle missing or unpublished content according to the routing behavior of your app; do not silently render misleading metadata for a page that should be a 404. The alt, size, and contentType exports describe the image, while the default function returns the rendered PNG. The documented Next.js example uses 1200×630 pixels.

Design for the renderer’s supported features
ImageResponse renders JSX into PNG using the Vercel OG, Satori, and Resvg stack. It supports a subset of CSS, including flexbox, absolute positioning, custom fonts, text wrapping, centering, and nested images. It does not support every browser layout feature: in particular, do not rely on CSS Grid. Its documented maximum bundle size is 500 KB, including JSX, CSS, fonts, images, and other assets. Fonts may be TTF, OTF, or WOFF; Next.js recommends TTF or OTF for font parsing speed. See the ImageResponse API reference.
Account for long and variable content
- Test the longest realistic title and author name. Set deliberate font sizes, line heights, and spacing so text remains inside the canvas.
- Decide how missing fields should render. A fallback label can be appropriate for optional metadata; missing page data may instead need to produce a not-found response.
- Use assets and fonts that the image function can access at render time, and keep their combined bundle contribution within the documented limit.
- Keep the image dimensions and visual hierarchy legible at social-preview size. A 1200×630 canvas is the Next.js documentation example, not a guarantee that every platform displays the whole image identically.
Understand metadata, caching, and freshness
The opengraph-image convention supplies the image resource and lets Next.js add the relevant Open Graph metadata. Generated images are statically optimized and cached by default unless request-time APIs or uncached data make generation dynamic. That affects freshness: if a post title changes, make sure the image’s cache or revalidation behavior follows the same update policy as the page data. Consult the metadata file documentation for current route and caching behavior.

- Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
- Crisp HD 720p/30 fps video calls with diagonal 55° field of view and auto light correction. Compatible with popular platforms including Skype and Zoom.
- The built-in noise-reducing mic makes sure your voice comes across clearly up to 1.5 meters away, even if you’re in busy surroundings.
- C270’s RightLight 2 feature adjusts to lighting conditions, producing brighter, contrasted images to help you look good in all your conference calls.
- The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.
For a file-based image convention, Next.js documents an 8 MB Open Graph image limit and a 5 MB Twitter image limit. Keep the returned file within the applicable limit when serving social metadata; verify the current platform requirements for your deployment rather than assuming all crawlers impose identical limits.

Consider a managed transformation service when it fits
A managed image service can make sense if your workflow already depends on hosted assets and image transformations, or if its delivery and caching model is preferable to rendering cards within the application. Cloudinary documents two Next.js patterns: CldOgImage, which generates social metadata using its transformation API, and getCldOgImageUrl, which creates a social-card image URL for App Router metadata.

Cloudinary documents a default social-card output of 1200×627 pixels, based on a 2400×1254 canvas resized down, with JPG as the default format. That differs from the 1200×630 Next.js example. Choose dimensions based on the framework and destination requirements you actually use. Cloudinary documents transformations such as text overlays, background removal, tint, opacity, and underlays; background removal requires its AI Background Removal add-on. - Prefer Next.js generation when route data already lives in the app and the design fits the supported renderer.
- Prefer a static file when the same image works across the relevant pages.
- Evaluate a managed service when transformation controls, asset delivery, or an existing hosted-image workflow matter more than keeping generation inside the route.
Verify the result before relying on it
- Open a representative page and inspect its server-produced HTML. Confirm that the
og:imagemetadata points to the expected image URL; check Twitter image metadata too if your site emits it. - Request the image URL directly. Confirm that it returns an image with the intended format and dimensions, rather than an error page or unexpected response.
- Test a normal title, a very long title, missing optional data, and a route that does not resolve.
- Change a page’s source data and verify that the resulting image updates on the schedule your caching and revalidation setup intends.
- Check the image against the relevant file-size limits and inspect its composition at the size social platforms are likely to show.
Troubleshoot common failures
The page has no usable og:image
Confirm the file is named exactly opengraph-image.tsx and is in the route segment you intend to cover. Then inspect the rendered page HTML and follow the emitted image URL directly. A static or generated file in a more specific segment can take precedence over a broader segment.

The image function fails to render
Check the server logs for errors in data loading, missing fields, or unsupported CSS. Replace Grid-based layout assumptions with supported flexbox or positioning, and confirm any external assets or fonts are available to the renderer.

The image does not reflect a recent content change
Review whether the route is statically optimized and cached, and whether the data source is cached. Align revalidation or request-time rendering with the freshness the page requires.
The output is rejected or missing on a platform
Verify the endpoint returns an image, the HTML contains the expected metadata, and the file respects the relevant platform size and format constraints. Platform requirements can differ, so do not treat one framework’s example dimensions as a universal specification.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can one Open Graph image file cover every route?
Yes. Put a static image at a broader route segment if a shared preview is suitable; a more specific route-segment image takes precedence.
Does generating a unique image improve social engagement?
No engagement outcome is established by the framework specifications. Dynamic generation gives you page-specific imagery, but it does not guarantee more clicks or shares.
