Why Does a USB-C Cable Charge a Phone but Not Transfer Data?

A USB-C connector does not guarantee data support. Find out why a phone charges but is not recognized, how to check Android USB mode, and what cable to choose.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A USB-C cable can charge a phone without transferring data because charging and data transfer are separate capabilities. The cable may be charge-only or faulty, or the phone may be set to charging mode. Try a known data-capable cable, then unlock the phone and check its USB connection mode.

Why charging works when data transfer does not

USB-C describes the connector, not every cable feature

USB-C is a connector shape; it does not guarantee a particular data speed or even that a cable supports data. The USB Implementers Forum explains that USB-C products can implement different performance and power features: “USB Type-C® is not USB 3.2 or USB4®.” A cable can therefore deliver power while lacking the conductors needed for data. Some charge-only cables omit or disconnect the D+ and D− data wires, and other cables may be faulty or nonstandard. USB-IF’s USB Type-C and USB 2.0 Type-C cable and connector guidelines explain the distinction; Sony also describes charge-only cables.

The phone may be set to charging mode

A data-capable cable will not necessarily make files visible immediately. On Android, the phone may connect in charging mode until you unlock it and select a data-transfer option. Motorola’s support instructions describe choosing “Media device (MTP)” for general file transfer or “Camera (PTP)” for photos and videos. The exact notification wording and menu options vary by phone maker and Android version. Motorola’s USB file-transfer steps show one Android workflow.

How to fix a phone that charges but is not recognized

  1. Try a cable that supports data. Use a cable explicitly described as data-capable, or one you know can transfer files with another device. A charge-only cable cannot carry files. Motorola advises using a cable capable of data transfer, and Huawei notes that some non-standard cables support charging only.
  2. Unlock the phone and select a transfer mode. On Motorola’s documented Android workflow, connect the phone, open the “Charging this device via USB” notification, then choose “Media device (MTP)” for general files or “Camera (PTP)” for photos and videos. Other Android devices may use different labels or steps.
  3. Reconnect and try another computer port. Disconnect and reconnect both ends, then try a different USB port on the computer. If the phone does not show a USB connection prompt, a cable problem is one possibility; Huawei recommends replacing a cable that may be nonstandard or malfunctioning.
  4. Test another data-capable cable and, if possible, another computer. If the phone still charges but the computer does not recognize it, consult the phone and computer makers’ support for those models. This symptom alone does not establish that the phone’s port is damaged.

What kind of replacement cable do you need?

For ordinary file transfers, choose a cable that explicitly supports data and has the correct ends for your phone and computer. You do not need the fastest cable available just to move basic files. Consider data rate only if faster transfers or another feature you need—such as video output—requires it, and confirm that the phone, computer, and cable all support that feature.

What to compare What to check
Data support Choose a data-capable cable rather than one specified for charging only.
Data rate USB 2.0 Type-C supports USB 2.0 data operation up to 480 Mbps under USB-IF’s 2023 guidance. That is a capability limit, not a promise of real-world file-transfer speed. A USB 2.0 Type-C cable does not carry USB 3.2, USB4, or alternate-mode capabilities. USB-IF’s 2023 guidance describes these distinctions.
Connector ends Match the cable to the ports available on both devices—for example, USB-C to USB-C or USB-C to USB-A.
Device support Check the phone and computer specifications as well as the cable. The connector alone does not establish their supported speed or features.

USB-IF says compliant USB-C to USB-C cable categories are marked for power capability; categories other than USB 2.0 High-Speed USB-C to USB-C are also required to carry the appropriate data-rate marking. Because USB 2.0 cables are an exception to the data-rate marking requirement, check the product description rather than assuming every cable will display a speed logo. See USB-IF’s cable and connector information.

Apple provides a device-specific example: its supplied USB-C cable supports charging and USB 2 speeds. Apple says certain iPhone Pro models can support USB 3.2 Gen 2 speeds up to 10 Gbit/s with an optional USB 3 cable. That figure is a model- and cable-specific maximum, not the speed of the included cable or a general claim about every phone. Check Apple’s iPhone USB-C guidance for the models it covers.
