Because Selenium screenshots the browser’s current state. If the portal is still displaying an OTP checkpoint when your script captures the page, the image will show that checkpoint; taking a screenshot does not complete authentication. The portal and script are unspecified, so the exact reason this session reached OTP—or why capture happened before authentication finished—cannot be determined from the screenshot alone.
What the screenshot tells you—and what it does not
Selenium’s WebDriver screenshot captures the current browsing context. It records what the browser is displaying at that moment; it does not submit an OTP, authenticate the account, or advance the page. See Selenium’s WebDriver documentation for screenshot behavior.

If an OTP page is visible in the capture, the browser was showing that page at capture time. That alone does not establish why the portal requested OTP, whether the login form failed, or whether the script took the screenshot too soon. The particular portal, account, and run sequence are not identified here.

OTP is a second authentication factor that may be delivered through an authenticator app, SMS, or email. A portal may require it as part of its login process or for a particular session. Which explanation applies depends on that portal and account; the screenshot cannot distinguish among them.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
Selenium cautions that “Automating this seamlessly and consistently is a big challenge in Selenium,” and recommends avoiding routine two-factor-authentication automation. Its guidance is about general test automation, not a portal-specific diagnosis. Read Selenium’s two-factor authentication guidance.
Check the script’s sequence before changing authentication
- Confirm the point of capture. Review the steps immediately before the screenshot: did the script submit the login form, and does the browser still display an OTP prompt?
- Wait for the expected state. If the test is meant to capture a page after login, wait for a known authenticated-page element or other explicit success condition before taking that screenshot. A fixed pause alone does not prove that authentication completed.
- Handle the factor through an authorized flow. If OTP is part of the expected login, use the portal’s approved process or the test factor authorized for that account. Do not treat a screenshot command as a way around authentication.
- Separate login evidence from success evidence. If the test is about the OTP checkpoint, capture it as such. If it is about a post-login page, take the success screenshot only after confirming that page is present.
Checking timing and page conditions is a troubleshooting approach, not proof that timing caused a particular screenshot. To diagnose a specific run, you need the portal, login sequence, capture point, and authorized test logs or observed page text.

For a portal your team controls, use a sanctioned test setup
Selenium suggests several approaches for systems under the test team’s control. It does not rank them; choose according to whether OTP itself is in scope and what security controls your environment requires.
- Dedicated test token: Ask the team responsible for the system whether it provides a test token for automation.
- Designated test user: The team may disable 2FA for selected test users.
- Test-environment configuration: The team may disable 2FA in a non-production test environment.
- Restricted IP exception: The team may exempt known test IP addresses, if that fits its security policy.
These are options for an environment you own or are authorized to test. They are not permission to bypass another organization’s OTP or CAPTCHA. Selenium’s guidance on authentication also discusses browser support for other authentication mechanisms; that is not a method for skipping an OTP checkpoint. See Selenium’s authentication discussion.

Do not assume every Indian portal uses the same OTP rules
OTP length, validity, attempt limits, and resend behavior are service-specific. For example, the Income Tax Department’s instructions for authenticating a notice describe a six-digit OTP, a 15-minute validity period, three attempts, and a resend action. Those details apply to that named notice-authentication procedure, not to Indian portals generally. See the Income Tax Department help page.

If your goal is a screenshot rather than browser-based login testing, ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API and MCP server. It captures the URL you request; it does not authenticate to a portal or get past an OTP checkpoint. Use only pages you are authorized to capture.

For example, make one GET request with cURL (replace the URL with a page you are authorized to capture):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Before capture, it accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and each response indicates the page verdict and billing status. Frequently Asked Questions
Does taking a Selenium screenshot submit the OTP?
No. A screenshot records the current browser state; it does not submit credentials or authenticate.
Can Selenium bypass an OTP page?
A screenshot is not a bypass. For a system your team controls, arrange an authorized test token or test-environment configuration; for a third-party portal, use its authorized login flow.
