Check whether the placeholder disappears, look for hydration errors in the browser console, and make automated captures wait for the specific content you need. The screenshot alone cannot identify which cause applies.
First determine whether the placeholder is temporary
Reload the page and watch what happens. If a skeleton, spinner, or fallback is replaced by the expected content, the screenshot may simply show an intermediate state. Next.js describes loading.js as a way to display loading UI while route content streams; that UI can be a skeleton or spinner and is replaced when the content becomes available. If the placeholder never changes, treat it as a possible application or data-loading problem rather than assuming the screenshot tool is at fault. A screenshot cannot distinguish a slow request from a failed request or an intentionally persistent design. Check the page’s data request and how the app handles its error state.
Check for a server and client rendering mismatch
React hydrates server-rendered HTML in the browser. The initial client render is expected to match the server output; later JavaScript can change what appears on screen. When the browser console reports a hydration warning or error, compare the HTML delivered by the server with the first render in the browser.

Look closely for output that can differ between those two environments: time-dependent values, browser-only APIs or state, and data that is not the same on the server and client. Next.js also lists browser extensions that modify HTML and CDN changes among possible causes of hydration mismatches. A warning is a useful lead, not proof that hydration caused the particular screenshot. See the React hydrateRoot documentation and Next.js hydration error guidance.
Make automated screenshots wait for the content that matters
A navigation milestone does not necessarily mean the application’s data or client-rendered content is ready. In a screenshot script, wait for a meaningful element or an application-specific ready condition rather than relying on navigation completion alone. For example, if the page shows a loading message until a results heading appears, wait for that heading before capturing:

If the expected element never appears, investigate the page’s data request and error handling instead of allowing the capture to pass as if it succeeded.

Keep the screenshot environment consistent
If the placeholder appears only in automated captures, reproduce the capture job’s browser version, operating system, headless mode, viewport, and relevant browser settings. Playwright notes that rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Keep those conditions stable when comparing visual snapshots.
For screenshot comparisons, Playwright documents taking screenshots until two consecutive captures match. That can help account for visual changes that settle over time, but it is not a substitute for waiting on the specific application content your test requires. See Playwright visual comparisons.

Troubleshoot by symptom

FAQ
Does a placeholder in a screenshot prove that the app has a bug?
No. It may be an intended loading state captured before content arrived. Whether it indicates a problem depends on whether the page later replaces it and whether the expected data and content become available.
Does waiting for a network-idle event guarantee the page is ready?
No universal navigation or network milestone proves that the particular content your test needs is visible. Prefer a selector or readiness condition tied to that content.
