Persistent or heavy ice is different. Check your model’s temperature limits, airflow, settings and error display before arranging service; frost alone does not identify a specific failed part.
When is frost normal, and when is it a problem?
Moisture condenses on the cold evaporator coil as air passes over it, so a little frost may form under some normal operating conditions. Frigidaire describes a coil sensor that can stop the compressor so the coil warms and the frost melts. Follow your manual’s defrost instructions and give the unit time to clear frost through its normal controls.

GE says a light coating may appear when a dehumidifier is first turned on and advises that it should disappear within 30 to 60 minutes under normal conditions. Haier says seasonal or first-use icing on its units will usually clear within 60 minutes unless the room is below 60°F. These are manufacturer-specific guidance, not universal timing guarantees. If ice is thick, does not clear, or returns repeatedly, work through the checks below.

The room is too cold for the model
Cold room air can make frost more likely, but there is no single cutoff that applies to every dehumidifier. GE says its units ordinarily will not operate satisfactorily below 41°F, while a Frigidaire general frost page also cites 41°F. A separate Frigidaire troubleshooting page says most standard models require temperatures above 65°F, and Haier describes frost below 60°F on its units. The guidance differs by product and context; use the operating range in the manual for your exact model.

Airflow is restricted
A dirty filter can reduce airflow across the evaporator. Frigidaire’s troubleshooting guidance for model FFAD5033R10 explains that reduced airflow can let the coils become too cold and moisture freeze on them. Blocked intake or outlet openings and insufficient clearance can also interfere with circulation. Check the unit’s manual for the required spacing. GE, for example, advises at least 18 inches of air space on all sides in its operating guidance; do not assume that distance applies to every brand or model.
The settings or an error need attention
Check the humidity setting and the display. Frigidaire specifically notes that its “CO” continuous-operation setting may be relevant to frost troubleshooting and directs owners to the use-and-care manual for displayed error codes. Settings and code meanings vary, so consult the manual rather than guessing what a symbol means.

What should you check, step by step?
- Identify the model. Read the rating label and find the matching owner’s manual. Use that manual for the unit’s temperature range, filter care, clearance and defrost procedure.
- Check room temperature. Compare the actual room conditions with the model’s documented operating limits. If the space is colder than allowed, move the unit to a suitable area or stop using it there.
- Restore airflow. Make sure the air intake and outlet are not blocked. Provide the clearance specified in the manual. Remove and clean the filter only as instructed; replace it only with a compatible part.
- Review settings and error codes. Confirm the humidity target and operating mode, then look up any displayed code in the model’s manual.
- Allow the documented defrost cycle to work. Use the unit’s automatic defrost or only the manual’s stated procedure. Do not chip ice off the coil or use a method the manufacturer does not recommend.
- Escalate if icing persists or returns. If heavy frost remains after the checks, or repeatedly builds up again, contact the manufacturer or a qualified service provider.
When is service or a different model worth considering?
Arrange service when heavy or recurring ice continues despite suitable room temperature, clear airflow, correct settings and the manual’s defrost procedure. Manufacturer guidance recommends service when its troubleshooting steps do not resolve the issue. Frost by itself does not establish whether a sensor, fan, compressor, refrigerant charge or another component is at fault; diagnosis requires evaluation of the unit.
If the room is routinely colder than your current dehumidifier’s documented operating range, compare potential replacements by their stated minimum operating temperature and how they detect and clear frost. Verify both details in the model’s manual before buying; a general label such as “low-temperature operation” does not establish suitability for every cold space.
