A YouTube watch page shows “Stream offline” when it is not receiving a playable live feed for that event, or when the scheduled event has not yet been taken live. For a cloud-hosted playlist, check both sides: confirm the cloud job is running and sending output to the correct YouTube event, then confirm that YouTube’s Live Control Room receives a preview and that the event has been started if required.
Why is my YouTube live stream offline?
A scheduled event and an active live stream are separate states. An event can have a watch page before an encoder sends video, and some workflows require the creator to click Go live after the preview appears. The watch page may therefore say offline even though the event exists.

With a cloud-hosted playlist, the video has to travel from the host’s job to YouTube’s ingest endpoint and then be associated with the intended event. The symptom alone does not identify which link failed. First use the preview in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room to locate the break: no preview usually points to the sender, destination, or ingest configuration; a preview with an offline public player points more toward the event state, selection, or access settings.

Check the failure in this order
1. No preview in Live Control Room
- Check the cloud job. In the hosting service, verify that the playlist job is active and that its outbound feed is running. If the service exposes output status or logs, look for a stopped job, connection failure, or repeated disconnect at the time the offline screen appeared. Log locations and labels vary by provider.
- Verify the destination. Make sure the job is configured for the YouTube event you intend to use, with the correct server URL and protocol. A feed sent to another event or an old destination will not populate the expected preview.
- Check the stream key. Confirm the cloud encoder has the current key for that event. YouTube describes a stream key as like the stream’s “password and address” and instructs creators to enter it in the encoder (Manage live stream settings; Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder). If the key was reset or may have been exposed, update it in the cloud host as well as in YouTube; a mismatch can prevent the feed from appearing.
- Check the protocol only if you know the feed uses HLS. YouTube’s HLS guidance calls for HTTPS, MPEG-TS segments, segment durations of 1–4 seconds, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. It also specifies supported codecs. These requirements apply to HLS, not to an RTMP(S) feed; do not change protocol settings based on HLS guidance unless the sender is actually using HLS (Use HLS ingest with YouTube Live).
2. Preview appears, but the watch page still says offline
- Confirm that the preview is for the intended event, not another scheduled stream.
- Wait for the preview to show the expected playlist video and audio. YouTube’s encoder workflow says to wait for the stream preview and then click Go live (Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder).
- If your workflow requires it, click Go live in Live Control Room. A preview confirms YouTube is receiving the feed; it does not necessarily mean the public event has started.
- Check the event’s privacy and accessibility settings, then open its watch page to verify that viewers can reach the intended event. YouTube recommends checking event accessibility and the watch page during setup (Live stream an event).
3. The stream was live, then went offline
Note when the public player changed state and compare that time with the cloud job’s output status or logs. If the job stopped, restart or recover it using the host’s documented controls. If the job still reports output, check whether YouTube continues to show a preview and whether the event remains live. A cloud host’s logs, retry behavior, and controls are provider-specific; without the host name and its status details, the screen alone cannot establish why the feed dropped.

4. The channel was only recently enabled for live streaming
Check the channel’s live-streaming eligibility and activation status. YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; first-time activation can take up to 24 hours (Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder). These are eligibility checks, not proof that they explain a particular offline screen.
Preflight a scheduled playlist stream
For a planned event, YouTube recommends configuring the encoder at least two hours ahead and starting it at least 15 minutes before the event. Use the time to verify the feed and watch page rather than waiting until the scheduled start (Live stream an event; Manage live stream settings).

- Open the intended event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- Confirm the cloud playlist job is running and its outbound feed is active.
- Check that the job uses the intended YouTube server URL and current stream key.
- Wait for a preview and verify that it shows the expected video and audio.
- Click Go live if the workflow requires it, then verify the event on its watch page.
- If the feed uses HLS, compare its settings with YouTube’s HLS ingest requirements; do not apply those requirements to RTMP(S).
